Commandant General Joseph Dunford (a good man) wants to exclude women from certain combat jobs in the Marine Corps. None of the other services want such exceptions. Dunford soon takes over as Chairman of the JCS, so some are wondering how he will review a policy that he approved as Commandant.
Dunford may end up at odds with Defence Secretary Ashton Carter and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus who both don't want any exceptions where women may serve.
Informing Dunford's decision is the Marine Corps' yearlong study on gender integration. It concluded that, overall, male-only [infantry] units performed better than gender-integrated units. One of the study's findings was that women had higher injury rates, mostly from having to carry heavy loads.
