The NRA (lobbyists for the firearms industry) chose Tennessee for their annual "Our Products are Designed to Kill" get together.  It figures; Tennessee is one of the states where guns kill more people than cars.

Read the article and take note of one of its most astounding revelations:
only 1/3 of American families own a gun!!

The other 2/3 can make gun ownership difficult if not impossible with their vote.

Considering how our neighborhood police have become militarized, firearms with projectiles that will pierce body armor should see giant sales increases!!

Funny, you leave out states in the NORTH. Why is that? Is it your inherent inner BIGOT that has to escape?

Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan have worse stats than does Tennessee, but don't let those facts get in the way of your spin. As a matter of fact, only Louisiana rates the term DEEP SOUTH as your misleading title states. Sad ....you don't know geography.

This time I absolutely agree with you.  Any state where guns kill more people than automobiles shouldn't be left out of the list of shame!  My bad!

PLEASE show us a reliable source for MotherJones false statement that only 1/3 of households own a gun in the US. Due to your age and meds, I'll help. There is NONE. Zip, zero, nada.

Cute try, why don't you post something truthful and relevant politically. Isn't this the political forum?

What fun, first we had to teach my good friend Wordslinger the temperature at which water boils, now which states are in the "Deep South".

According to our Socialist/Communist good friend Wordslinger, these are all states in the "DEEP SOUTH".

Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Arizona, Indiana, Washington, Colorado, Maryland, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming

Yeah, I know, you just can't make these things up!

Their desperation has gotten so bad, they blatantly lie in their headlines and throughout their posts.

Keep up the good work while you can Wordslinger!

Mother Jones was not the source of the 1/3 of American families own a gun.  They were quoting the source.  If you weren't losing your ability to read you'd have seen that.

Here's the relevant quote:  "

The Violence Policy Center's report is the latest among several studies indicating that guns are soon likely to surpass cars as America's "top killing machine." While traffic safety regulations have helped reduce the number of motor-vehicle-related deaths over the years, the report notes that the number of deaths caused by firearms has been creeping up, as the chart below shows. That's noteworthy in part because about 90 percent of American households own a car, but less than a third of American households own guns.

Why are you asking everyone if this is the political forum?  Get back on your prozac.

As I said, you have no reliable source for the statement that 1/3 of households have at least one gun. The reason for that is there is NO RELIABLE SOURCE for how many households

How too are these states the "DEEP SOUTH"? According to our Socialist/Communist good friend Wordslinger, these are all states in the "DEEP SOUTH".

Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Arizona, Indiana, Washington, Colorado, Maryland, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming

Only FOUR of the SEVENTEEN states you cited are in the South.

My headline is correct, in the deep south guns do kill more people than vehicles do.

My choosing to feature the south doesn't exclude the stats of  other areas.

The figure of 1/3 of American households own a gun comes directly from the quote in the link I provided.

How you can call me a fool when you don't even know whether this is the political part of the forum speaks for itself.

My, do you believe that the larger your font, the better it will be heard? I use it to emphasize your and others errors.

You use a far left Progressive source and even modify the headline of that source, which I do as well. You simply changed yours to a lie. Four of fifty states does not constitute the Deep South. Why not say the...Deep North?

As for the 1/3, there is no source for that figure. I looked, no where is a supportable source for that figure. They use registered weapons. In this day and age of a government, distrusted by most, do you really think millions of weapons have not been sold and are not registered?

You have proven yourself as good a foil as is 2seaoat. Keep up the good work!

OK, you win about the how many families own guns in America issue.  I admit that only 1/3 of American households own a registered gun.  But even so, the claim that in many American states, guns kill more people than auto accidents, is true and shameful.

As a bloodsucking corporate lackey, your loyalty to the NRA -- America's most powerful lobbyists for the firearms industry -- is duly acknowledged.

Reality.

Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.  Benito Mussolini

This is certainly a truthful and reliable piece of information.

I will object and complain once again about your constant harping over the source of valid information.

If something is accurate I don't care where it is originally referenced. The most far right or far left news source is perfectly capable of posting accurate information. The left/right source has no relevance whatsoever. Just because it is posted on Fox or Huffington Post matters not a wit. If it is true it is true if it is false it is false. According to the links in the original article the group that gathered the gun ownership data is a very reliable source.

Here is the source of the survey showing that fewer than 1/3 of households in the U.S. own a gun.

You've probably heard by now that the Obama administration has been a boon to the U.S. firearm industry. Gun manufacturers boosted production by 31 percent between 2011 and 2012. National tragedies from Newtown to Ferguson are accompanied by stories of surging gun sales.

But data released this week from the General Social Survey, widely regarded as the gold standard for social science survey research, shows that in 2014, the number of American households owning guns remained at 40-year lows.

In 2014, guns were present in fewer than a third of U.S. households -- 32 percent -- according to the survey. That's 22 percentage points lower than the high of 54 percent recorded in 1977.

Okay, I stand corrected.  32% isn't quite 33% or 1/3.

But, my original point is valid.  There are a lot more American voters who don't have guns.  And eventually they will become fed-up with making it so easy for a demented American to obtain a firearm.

Working against that sanity, of course, is the fact that our police have become our number one enemy -- we're far more likely to be gunned down by uniformed Law Enforcement Officer than a terrorist.

Maybe we all should have guns!

The Times, They are a'changin'.

Reality.

Your point is very valid. Broadly speaking gun deaths are up and fewer households own guns than don't. In some states more deaths are caused by guns than cars.

I suppose there is a time and a place to call out discrepancies in statements but sometimes it get to the point where the overriding idea becomes obscured by bringing up picky points.

It looks to me as if we need to be very careful with our wording so as to not provoke the easily distracted among us. Too much of this "looking over our shoulders" thinking however might dampen free expression and that would be a shame. I'd rather be able to throw an idea out there and not have to defend something as insignificant as the difference of 32% or 33% representing 1/3 of something.

That is just a way to try and take the focus off of the reality of the original post. Of course that is the only defense the right wing has to argue about the increase in gun deaths so we just have to endure this weakness in their point of view. As usual they are doing the best they can.

Another less than brilliant question.  To the dead victims, whether they were killed on purpose or by accident doesn't matter.

Guns have one purpose -- to kill.  Put enough of them in the hands of sick, demented people, and there will be blood.

The problem is so bad that you are far more likely to be shot to death by a gun than killed in a car wreck.

People who have anger issues shouldn't be allowed to carry a gun.  That would, I believe, include most police officers.
