I lived in Germany. Beautiful place. Low effect lighting even back in the 80s - eye strain. People walk. Small refrigerators so daily walk to the grocery store. Govt backed transportation - rail and bus. Mild summers - no need for AC. Winters were cold - heating oil for radiators. No shops open after 2 pm on Saturday until Monday morning 8 am. All cost savings - inconveniences you learn to live with - overall I'd live there again. Life was simple.

They also don't have demographic of citizens who deny science and innovation.

I loved the efficiency of space in their homes. Square footage did not compare to US standards but the space is optimally used. I had more storage in a 960 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment than I did in a 2500 sq foot home stateside when we returned.

But Americans think bigger is better. And a majority think sharing and caring is progressively leftist and socialist and will not begin to consider some of the things that do work and are investments into a country's future.

Oh well...I'll wait for someone to tell me to go live there again.  Laughing Laughing

You make it sound as if we can just write all this off as smaller square footage, perfect weather, and "inconveniences that you learn to live with".

The reality of the situation, however, is that Germany has invested heavily in renewable energy sources and they have set clearly defined goals with respect to conservation and have strove to meet those goals.  Germany is actively trying to become a more efficient country.  Contrast that with the US, where we have a demographic of citizens who praise politicians that approach the podium wielding a 64oz "Big Gulp" soda while chanting "DRILL BABY DRILL!!!!111", and who can't quite wrap their heads around things like a scientific consensus on phenomena such as climate change.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go put on several jackets and then go out for a stroll in my pickup truck while I blast the AC on my way to get lunch, which will be deep fried and served to me in a bucket. Yeehaw!!!

Can't change to what the Germans are doing, and see the same benefit in this country.

Size does matter.

Perhaps if we looked at it on a state level without federal intrusion.

But that would go back to an age old fight...

That "age old fight" is still being waged.

My BIL has been working on solar projects for the past few years...massive ones for power generation and industrial applications.

As a matter of fact,  I was getting ready to post this:

Achieving independence: US oil production

http://www.pennenergy.com/articles/pennenergy/2014/07/achieving-independence-us-oil-production.html?cmpid=EnlResearchJuly232014

Germany ranks #1 in World Energy Efficiency while the US isn't even in the top 10. Chilco10

Look at that graph and how much it has climbed since Obama assumed office..... The U.S. now produces more liquid hydrocarbons (that is oil and natural gas liquids) than do both Saudi Arabia and Russia. This trend will continue at least through 2019, and the upswing in U.S. oil production will stay steady at least through 2040. This kinda blows-up poster Markle's assertions that President Obama is unfriendly to the oil industry.

The article does assert that "...absent greater fuel-efficiency and a more renewables-friendly energy policy, energy independence will be just beyond reach..." So, if we could get more members of the GOP on board, and establish a credible energy policy that leans toward reducing oil-consumption, our bountiful shale reserves would truly make us independent from those pesky OPEC countries.

I am a "drill-baby-drill" proponent for one reason only: The next wingnut Republican who gets elected president will likely want to invade yet another country who has a lot of oil. Um, let's see: I think we need to occupy Brazil so their oil wealth does not fall into the hands of South American terrorists.....

The definition of the word Conundrum is: something that is puzzling or confusing. Here are six Conundrums of socialism in the United States of America
1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized.
2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims.
3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government.
4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer.
5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries.
Think about it! And that, my friends, pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st Century. Makes you wonder who is doing the math.
These three, short sentences tell you a lot about the direction of our current government and cultural environment:
1. We are advised to NOT judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works.
And here's another one worth considering...
2. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. Think about it..... and Last but not least,
3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military, and cutting our army to a level lower than before WWII, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to illegal aliens.
Am I the only one missing something?
-----
You never lived on the economy like so many military folks have to do or have done. I was there to help with the mortuary affairs section of Ramstein when bodies were returning from Astan and Iraq in large numbers. The average mil person and family were struggling with living on the economy in the Kaiserslautern community around the base. 500 per month for electric bills were not uncommon in winter. Ramstein cannot house the folks required to man the base so families are forced to live out in town. It's sad. Then there is the every 15
Month deployment rotation as well that is down to every year now despite the drawdown.

What a plan by our energy nuts!  Working so well in their beloved Germany!

GERMANY: Renewable Energy Policy “Complete Failure”… Bring On The Dirty Coal Monsters

Filed in Energy, News  by SRSrocco  on April 28, 2014

In a stunning admission, the German Government recently announced that its transition to Renewable Energy was, “On the Verge of Failure.”  This blunt statement was released by Germany’s Economic Minister and Vice Chancellor to Angela Merkel, Sigmar Gabriel at an event at SMA Solar… Germany’s leading manufacturer of Solar technology.

According to the article, Angela Merkel’s Vice Chancellor Stuns, Declares Germany’s ‘Energiewende’ To Be On The Verge Of Failure:

“The truth is that in all fields we under-estimated the complexity of the Energiewende.”

Gabriel is not only the national economics minister and vice chancellor to Angela Merkel, he is also head of Germany’s socialist SPD party, which is now the coalition partner in Angela Merkel’s CDU/SPD grand coalition government. Moreover Gabriel was once the country’s environment minister and a devout believer in global warming and in Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth.

“Those who are the engines of the transformation to renewable energies, that’s you, you don’t see how close we are to the failure of the energy transformation.”

Mr. Markle is a hoot. He says that solar is failing in Germany contrary to every scholarly paper saying the opposite, and to prove his point he posts a video in german without translation.......which he just concludes this is what is being said.....too funny.

Not only, he had to go start his own thread with that piece, in order to counter this thread. That is even though he already used that article in a new thread last week.

It must be hard work being the lone wingnut guarding over a forum filled with progressive posters. Every time a new thread gets put up, the Markle radar set gets turned on: "...Where on my hard drive is that cut and paste I used three years ago to counter a similar post as this one?.." It has to be exasperating work to keep up with it all...

.....from a blog post.

That's almost as hilarious as some other conservative nutjob linking to a Markle post at this forum as a "source".

Of course those writing those papers aren't doing without electricity.

They're also NOT the GOVERNMENT who also state the system is a failure.

It appears the Germans want to make life healthier and cheaper too. And half the U,S. doesn't. Go figure ...
