Autonomous vehicles are coming! Autonomous cars will account for up to 75% of vehicles on the road by 2040. Some of us might live to see this unfold......

Self-driving cars will be programmed to follow all traffic laws and will interact with each other to avoid crashes. They will also greatly reduce fuel consumption, starting and stopping, and traffic congestion. There won't be a need for traffic lights at intersections, as Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) technology will allow seamless transition of cars through road crossings. Eventually, human interfaces like the steering wheel, brakes, and gas pedal will be replaced by sensors and software.

66 million barrels of petroleum are wasted every year idling in traffic, and 90% of all traffic accidents are caused by human error.

I enjoy driving. I can see that model in large cities and the interstate system, but everything in between does not make much sense unless the gps and grid are flawless.
