Indictment: Rep. Grimm hid more than $1M in restaurant sales, wages

U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm failed to report more than $1 million in sales and wages at his former Manhattan restaurant, using unreported cash to pay undocumented workers "off the books" to "evade taxes and keep more money for himself," a U.S. attorney told reporters Monday.   ...He "never met a tax he didn't lie to evade....

All Congressmen and women are rotten to the core, but this sounds exactly like what a Republican politician would do..... Razz

The judge made him post a $400K bond and surrender all his firearms and also his passport. He must be potentially violent, or a flight risk....   Suspect  Shocked

Maybe he had to give up his guns because he was a Teahadist. He was known as a member of the Staten Island Tea Party (he served Staten Island, NY). This turkey was first elected in 2011 and he is also a former Marine (Persian Gulf War vet) and FBI agent.

Yeah when the Attorney General is an outright blatant crook and people lie to congress all the time and walk free, Harry Reid plays dirty with campaign funds......does seem lopsided on who gets punished and for what...

Let me help you, FT.

Grimm must be a real thug. He threatened to throw the reporter off the balcony inside the chambers of Congress, and then came back and said: "I will break you in half!" All of this was caught on camera. Hey, maybe his Manhattan restaurant is somehow connected to the Mafia.  Embarassed

He is now in the damage control mode and has issued a formal public apology to the reporter and invited him to lunch.  Rolling Eyes

Let's hope Grimm never tries to run for President.

I can't wait for poster Markle's post. He'll be in full damage-control mode for this thread. We can't have any threads bashing his precious Republicans, you know.... Razz Razz

Party affiliation has little to do with the arrogance of those in Congress who repeatedly believe they are above the law.

In 2010 Democrat Charles Rangel became one of only 27 representatives  censured by the House of Representatives in its history.

Rangel was found guilty by the ethics panel of 11 counts of violating ethics rules, including charges that he improperly solicited millions of dollars from corporate officials and lobbyists for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College of New York, failed to disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars of income and assets on financial disclosure forms, maintained a rent-stabilized apartment as a campaign office in a Harlem apartment building and failed to pay income taxes on a villa in the Dominican Republic.

We already know that about Rangel and have vilified him. No need to try and justify your man.

This lying, thieving republican bastard replaced a lying thieving democrat.

Your government in action!

Reality.

It's Staten Island.

Three quarters of his constituents are under indictment.

Rangel was censured in 2010.
He did not step down from his office.
He ran again, and won in 2012.
And, he intends to run again in 2014.

None of this sounds like vilification by either his constituency or Democrats.

Do not infer an intent to "justify" Grimm. My original post was merely pointing out that it’s not just Republicans that are capable of misdeeds.  The entire lot of senators and representatives is suspect.

“...As a former FBI agent, Representative Grimm should understand the motto: fidelity, bravery, and integrity. Yet he broke our credo at nearly every turn. In this twenty-count indictment, Representative Grimm lived by a new motto: fraud, perjury, and obstruction..."

It shows you that the Tea Party can't even properly vet their own candidates. And more of them are trying to run?  Embarassed

It shows me that many "constituents" continue to operate under the belief that "whatever it takes to bring home the bacon" is acceptable - just try not to get caught. Again, this applies to all parties.

What's your point? That because a democrat thieving political bastard gets caught red-handed, it's okay for a republican to be similarly exposed? That's pure crapola and you know it. Very few of this forum see Grimm's party affiliation as the feature event of this story. What's important isn't the party of the criminal, but the crime of those in power.

Yes, corruption knows no party affiliation in Washington DC.

I wonder when the next round of teenage boy f*ckers will be outed?

We know that it's not just republicans. I believe the democrats are who censured him. This tit for tat is ridiculous. We are not responsible for his constituency.

Then maybe the OP shouldnt have used the triggering term "GOP" in his title!

The point was that it is ALL in power who are subject to scrutiny, not just Republicans, as the OP notes cavalierly. One would think that's a no-brainer (just look at Congress' history of corruption).  But, per the OP, some here are still itching to cast the opposition party as evil, while sometimes overlooking the errors of the members in their own party. I have no delusions that one party is cleaner/better/holier than any other party.  It seems that all are subject to succumb to the trappings of POWER.
