I met with Mr. Ichi for lunch this week and he drives the neatest economy car around. It gets 50+ mpg has 3 cylinders and they have a nationwide support club...I want one !....The gentleman is also an excellent mechanic and has babied  his car to well over 200k miles and it is still going strong. Lookout prius you can't touch this...

One of those rearended my Z-71 at the corner of Johnson and Davis about 7 years ago. Needless to say, it was totaled.

My name is Doug Heffron in 1993 I built a high mileage car, it was built around a 1989 Geo Metro ultra-fuel-efficient Xfi model. This car originally was a joint venture between General Motors and Suzuki, which delivered as much as 58 miles per gallon. 49 hp that's all it take to get a person to work safely and comfortable. I reworked this car to get even better mileage. I was getting 75 mpg for the 2 years I drove it.

the author is clueless. and no sane person reads EPA lies. only reality wins. and the 1liter motor does get fantastic MGP, join any metro forum and see the truth. a clueless author, to a fault. my guess, is he is a salesmen at a stealer ship. wana bet?

I had a metro too a 95 four door and I got awesome gas mileage , clearly the author has no idea what the actual facts are or how to obtain them

I own a stock 1994 GEO Metro LSI, 3 cyl. With 5 spd manual trans. I get 63.4 MPG at 58 MPH on a flat road consistently! In mountainous highway driving 52 MPG! Around town, I can squeeze 47 MPG from it. On a flat road at a steady 50 MPH, I have received a (Possible 74 MPG) but can not confirm this. The only modifications to this car are a taller thinner tire @ 44 PSI, ignition timing advanced 6 degrease above factory specs. Around town driving I fill the tank 1 time every 3 months! I have owned this car for 7 years it has over 200K miles on it and I would not trade it for a new hybrid. BELIEVE THIS OR NOT, I can easily prove the EPA figures are wrong!!I

One last comment on your article...

Funny thing... I have a 1992 Geo Metro, the car well tuned (Which is the way I keep mine) gets 53MPG in the highway and 46 in town. I bought it 2 years ago, and comparing to the cars I was driving (a V6 Truck and a V8 camaro) I have saved over 5,000.00. I go to from my town to Salt Lake city and back on less than 80.00 worth of fuel, and I drive 8 hours at 75 Miles per hour... and this article is telling me I should NOT buy a Geo to save on gas... I have one thing to say to the guy who wrote theis article: With all the respect: Go F**** yourself!!! and get your facts together before placing this nonsense stuff online... sorry, I did not mean to be rude.

LOL  I guess you cant hide from the Geo millage issue.  50 mpg is very doable with a 3 cylinder/5 speed  The automatics and the 4 cylinders will not. Neither will they if you drive over 70 mph for any length of time.
Geo Metros are not for everyone but they still command a place in today transportation market.  Safety is somewhat relative and common sense tells you that a very small light war car will be less safe that a Ford F-30 Titan.
They are fun cars.  Mine is convertible and has many upgrades  that the Standard Geos lack.
It is a fun car.  Easy to drive, very cheap on gas, parts are cheap and easy to find.  I have 258,000 on my 93 vert.  I totally rebuilt it at around 210,000.  I do all my own work for for it is very cheap and dependable transportation.

I belong to the GeoMetroForum.  There are over 14, 000 member.  We have Events where we meet and swap parts, eat, and tell lies.  The Geos on the Gulf  event  in Pensacola will be #4 and will be Held in Big Lagoon state park.
We are a very unique group of people as many of us are friends and help each other out.  Last week I assisted some people from Utah(yes they drove a Geo from Utah 2100 miles one way)  It was a small job so I let them use my shop and I ran parts.  Their daughter is stationed at Corry field.  Good people, typical of many of the GMF members

Nice car, Ichi-san!

PRIUSES are much nicer cars. Geos are old school but for the price they are hard to beat. Last convert was a 93 so you are looking at a 20 year old car.

My wife, Donna called me one day and said "There is cute little car down at Bob Salters and I want to buy it" I went and looked at it with her. Damn a purple Geo Metro. WTF!!! No way. No damn way I want a Purple little toy car. I aint buying it...........On the way home she let me drive some and I was hooked. This was back in 98 and she drove it for many years. She wanted to trade it in but I bought it from her and have had it every since. And Yes I have caught a lot of grief about driving a purple "sissy" car. But the ladys really seem to like it. Something I found out too late in life. LOL
After Donna passed I restored the Geo. Very few cars make ya smile when you drive them. This one does
.

They are a niche auto. I have a 2010 Corolla that gets around 36 mpg cruising close to 80 mph on the interstate.. No comparison but the Geo is still fun to drive. Pisses the SUV drivers off when you fill up and say loud enough for them to hear. "Damn it Took 20 dollars worth. This son of a bitch needs a tune up"

I doubt my '66 Goat would be welcome. If we weren't careful it could easily suck down two or three of them into one of the three, two barrel carburetors. Wink

But hey, whatever floats your boat.

You may love that gas mileage but you do know that statistically, for every couple hundred pounds that come off a car raises the fatality rate for that car.

Yeah and like Bob says every gas guzzler you girls just got to have makes us all the more dependent on foreign oil and keeps these stupid wars going on and on and on....Besides if you ride a motorcycle you don't really care about safety features and airbags and stuff anyway...
