NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- In the midst of major changes in health care, UnitedHealthCare has sent thousands of pink slips to Connecticut doctors.

Termination letters went to physicians caring for Medicare patients. Those letters were sent out to doctors caring for 'Medicare Advantage' patients. It's a plan, marketed to Seniors to provide additional services through UnitedHealthCare.

A mix of primary care and specialty doctors are affected by it. And it comes at a questionable time.

Open enrollment for Medicare starts next Tuesday, and it's still not clear at this time as to which doctors are still in the United network.

The Connecticut State Medical Society is fighting back. The biggest concern is patient access to healthcare.

"What the government is looking for is to manage better care by adding a patient centered medical home so that you have a doctor who is totally invested with taking care of every aspect of the patient and coordinating it. This is clearly not a patient centered decision," said Dr. Michael Saffir, President of CT State Medical Society.

Dr. Saffir says the State Medical Society is in contact with UnitedHealthcare. They are also asking doctors to call United to find out why they were terminated without cause as notified

lots of stories like this out there.. your just not seeing it...

What you're not saying is it only affects those w/ the advantage plan which we know was a big waste and cost to medicare. This is a good thing.

It doesn't limit a damn thing. People can go to any Dr. they like. Pure horseshit.

Unless you now qualify for medicaid or medicare... there won't be anything free about your current options.

That's true.

Just so you write them a check or put their fee on your credit card.

Paying patients are always seen. Doctors can not keep a practice running by having a waiting room filled with non- paying patients. Just like with any business.....if you don't get compensated you cannot survive.

Exactly correct, Joani. That is why the law states that everyone needs to get insurance to pay the doctor. It is curious that you continue to argue to keep giving away free healthcare.

You contradict yourself, Joani.
So sorry.

Free healthcare has always been given out, its called charity.

unfortunately you and your ilk want to ruin a entire health system for a few who were already being taken care of. NOT ONE gawd damn person has been left on the steps to die because of non payment.

it is a FACT that people who get free healthcare abuse it. ask Medicaid.

You want to break the system. odumbass wants to break the system.

he and and the left are terrorist to this countries health on many venues.

Oh it was Medicare Advantage, should have read the article first. I wonder if UHC is trying to get the doc's to accept less than Medicare fee schedule, which is illegal, they have to pay the same or above Medicare schedule. Or the CEO of UHC is taking that 3% increase they received for Medicare Advantage and raising his salary again. I think he is the highest paid Healthcare insurance company exec in the nation along with his stock options. Trying to fit all their policyholder's into a smaller network? It's only going to benefit UHC. We all know insurance company's are buttheads.

Insurance companies, for years have made physicians agree to their fee schedule in order to be a provider in their group plans.

I've told the story many times here and the PNJ......Our physicians ( 2001) only received $250.00 insurance reimbursement for a diagnostic knee arthroscopy when the California relative value study scale was listed at $1800. The 250.00 dollar fee included the procedure and physician's post op care.
