Recycling worries
Last week, the ECUA board approved a higher-than-anticipated increase in the trash pickup fee to raise emergency cash in the event it would have to undertake costly measures — such as hauling recyclables to a facility in Atlanta — in the event West Florida were to close.
Neither ECUA nor the city pay West Florida to collect recyclables. Instead, the company’s revenue comes from selling the recycled material.
The forced closure in July and the tons of recyclables lost to the landfill throughout the wet summer months were a double hit for the company: In addition to losing its valuable commodity, it also had to pay the $42-per-ton tipping fee at the landfill.
In hiking its sanitation fee, ECUA has joined other local officials in expressing concern about the company.
