There are lingering questions about the future of the Marines, with some suggesting that their missions are better conducted by the Army, Navy and Special Forces.

The Senate and House of Representatives passed a law establishing a Corps of Marines on July 11, 1798. After WWII, Congress decided the Marines would have 3 divisions and 3 air wings, though the 3rd MarDiv and 1st MAW are only provisionally manned overseas in Japan from the other two divisions and wings.

I think the Marine Corps will stay around, though it might shrink some as the military shrinks from where it is now. End strength was up to 202,000 during the height of the Iraq war, but post-war, it is shrinking to 182,000. During the height of the Cold War, when my military service occurred, USMC end  strength was never more than 175,000.

The first dope that really tries to disband the Marine Corps will likely get accidently fragged going out for coffee.

So, now we finally know...a Marine stole your wife. LOL.

Seriously though, there is not a replacement for the Marines and even American Sniper author the late SEAL Christopher Kyle admitted that Marines were quite the "bad asses" when he was with them in Iraq accumulating his 165 or so + EKIA.

The Army isn't worth a damn at amphibious assault and the Army has shown its ineptness in many facets of land and amphibious warfare over the years. Hell, in Grenada, an entire company of Army grunts was pinned down by one Cuban sniper.

The only people that don't want the Marines are people like TEO who are intimidated by them.

When there is no Marine Corps, there will not be a United States.

It is what it is swab jock. You squids cannot even protect your aircraft carrier akippers so you have to have Marines do it.

How big is the can and how many marines will fit in it?

We have to consider the cost effectiveness of the situation.

I remember seeing the exhibition raquetball courts in the new deluxe gymnasium at Kadena AB on Okinawa in the 1980s, along with its fresh juice bar, where you could get a fruit shake made to order. Meanwhile, Marines worked out in their cramped and worn out gym across the island at Futenma. A bundle could probably be saved by simply greatly reducing the funding for USAF recreation initiatives.

Different budgeting priorities and mentalities.

The naval services builds ships while the army and air force build bases.

Not saying that I agree with it but there it is and ships cost a lot to build.

But so do B-2 bombers and F-22 jets. I guess the F-35 will break the bank for all services.

Yeah like the Navy and Marines don't have an air force of their own so they can keep up and encourage foreign relations.

As I said it's a different mentality and budgeting priorities.
