White supremacists sentenced for hate crime

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Two members of a white supremacist group will do prison time for their roles in a New Year's Eve attack on two men of Egyptian descent in central New Jersey.

Michal Gunar, of East Windsor, and Kyle Powell, of Mount Ephraim, were charged with violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Gunar was sentenced Wednesday to nearly three years after pleading guilty to assault. He also faces deportation to his native Slovakia.

Powell was sentenced to 15 months on a conspiracy charge.

U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman says the men had attended a white supremacist get-together and then drove to an apartment complex in Sayreville in 2011 looking for non-whites to attack.

Gunar admitted he brandished a knife and shouted anti-Arab slurs.

In the meantime, Major Nidal Hassan, who did shout Allah Akbar during his massacre at Ft Hood is not deemed as a hate crime or even a terrorist attack by the COWH.
