Egypt’s generals, President Obama double down on failed policies

"The Obama administration is doubling down on its own failures. During 2011 and 2012, it refused to respond to the military’s abuses by reducing or suspending aid. For the past year it remained publicly silent and passive while the Morsi government abused its powers. Now it is contending that a cutoff of U.S. aid — required by law following any ouster of an elected government in which the military plays a decisive role — would not be in the U.S. interest.

By refusing to follow the law even after the military’s brutal and autocratic actions, the administration is sending the message that nothing — short of war with Israel — will lead to a rupture with the Egyptian armed forces. That will merely encourage the generals to continue their reckless and counterproductive behavior."

When is a coup not really a coup?....Reminds of the man made incident usage rather than calling it what it is....

The amazing thing is how these politicians can lie so easily. When the military threw Morsi out (justified or not doesn't matter - it was a coup) and our law is pretty clear about what happens next - aid is cut off at least until after a democratic election. But this administration and the Congress chooses to obfuscate, waffle, and generally ignore the law.

Section 508 of the Foreign Assistance Act says unequivocally that there can be no aid “to any country whose duly elected head of government is deposed by military coup or decree.” Morsi was duly elected, so his ouster pretty much requires the United States to cut off $1.5 billion in foreign aid. But Morsi governed as an Islamist thug — and the administration doesn’t want to punish the Egyptian military for doing the good deed of removing him from power.
