I am so proud of this woman for standing up (literally) for women in Texas and throughout the country in a 13-hour filibuster.

Texas Senator Wendy Davis 3185-Texas-State-Sen-Wendy-Davis-to-Filibuster-for

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/texas-state-senator-wendy-davis-filibusters-her-way-to-democratic-stardom/2013/06/26/aace267c-de85-11e2-b2d4-ea6d8f477a01_story.html

"Wendy Davis strode onto the floor of the Texas Senate chamber on Tuesday in rouge-red running shoes, and came off it early Wednesday morning as the Democratic Party’s newest star.

During 13 hours in between, the little-known legislator from Fort Worth delivered a filibuster that electrified social media and stopped passage of one of the nation’s toughest set of abortion restrictions in the waning hours of a special session.

As word spread, supporters thronged the capitol’s entrances, lined the walkways encircling the rotunda and turned the Senate chamber’s gallery into a cheering section.

What made the scene so riveting was the woman who was required to speak without a break, without straying from the topic and without even leaning on her antique walnut desk. As time ran out, Republicans deemed her to have violated those rules — including once for being helped with a back brace — and made her give up the floor.

Such was the bedlam, however, that when the 19-10 vote finally happened, it came several minutes too late for a midnight deadline.

That kind of tenacity has also been the story of her life. Davis, 50, became a mother while still in her teens, lived for a time in a trailer park and graduated with honors from Harvard Law School.

As she spoke, Twitter registered 400,000 tweets with the hashtag #standwithwendy. One of them came from the official account of President Obama, and said: “Something special is happening in Austin tonight.”

But it was a rare — and likely temporary — victory for abortion rights advocates.

Davis succeeded in running out the clock on the session. So late Wednesday afternoon, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) announced that he would call the legislature back for another special session, to begin July 1. The abortion bill appears certain to be considered again, and if the Republican leadership acts quickly enough, it will not be subject to a filibuster.

“Obviously, if he brings that back again and the management in the capitol on both sides manages time better than they did when we started this past special session, that bill will pass,” Davis conceded in an interview.

The legislation would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which is about four weeks before a fetus is viable; mandate abortion clinics to meet the same standards as hospital-style surgical centers; and require doctors who perform the procedure to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.

Advocates of the legislation say it is a means of assuring abortion is safe; opponents say it would force nearly every abortion clinic in the state to close.

In the 2012 presidential and Senate elections, Republicans felt a backlash for waging what Democrats branded a “war on women,” particularly on questions involving contraception and abortion.

But there is a political tide pulling in the other direction. During the more than two years since the 2010 elections strengthened Republican power in state capitals across the country, many have moved to put new limitations on abortion..."

If you'll note, Texas filibusters do not allow for breaks for any reason.  This lady stood and talked for 13 hours without even touching the podium.

Who said I don't like filibusters?

What's so unusual about a woman who can talk for 13 hours? My mother-in-law can do that without breaking a sweat. If that makes this lady your "hero" you sure have the bar set low on that definition although I have to give a nod to her convictions.

This is being viewed/posted on as a courageous act...wait until a republican fillibusters something and watch the reactions...Even 'nochains' newest ally wants to give her a medal...'nochain' and 'nightmare' agreeing again....it's gotta be those get togethers at Denny's on Saturdays....

I applauded this as well.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, The Speech: A Historic Filibuster on Corporate Greed and the Decline of Our Middle Class
Start: 02/13/2011 11:30 am
On Friday, December 10, 2010, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders walked on to the floor of the United States Senate and began speaking. It turned out to be a very long speech, lasting over eight and a half hours.

And it hit a nerve. Millions followed the speech online until the traffic crashed the Senate server. A huge, positive grassroots response tied up the phones in the senator’s offices in Vermont and Washington. President Obama reportedly held an impromptu press conference with former President Clinton to deflect media attention away from Sanders’ speech. Editorials and news coverage appeared throughout the world.

Texas Senator Wendy Davis Sanders-The_Speech_pb

In his speech, Sanders blasted the agreement that President Obama struck with Republicans, which extended the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, lowered estate tax rates for the very, very rich, and set a terrible precedent by establishing a “payroll tax holiday” diverting revenue away from the Social Security Trust Fund, and threatening the fund’s very future.

But the speech was more than a critique of a particular piece of legislation. It was a dissection of the collapse of the American middle class and a well-researched attack on corporate greed and on public policy which, over the last several decades, has led to a huge growth in millionaires even as the United States has the highest rate of childhood poverty in the industrialized world. It was a plea for a fundamental change in national priorities, for government policy that reflects the needs of working families, and not just the wealthy and their lobbyists.

Finally, Sanders’ speech—published in its entirety with an introduction by the senator—is a call for action. It is a passionate statement informing us that the only people who will save the middle class of this country is the middle class itself, but only if it is informed, organized, and prepared to take on the enormously powerful special interests dominating Washington.

Senator Bernie Sanders is the longest-serving Independent in the history of the United States Congress. He has represented Vermont in the Senate for four years and in the House for sixteen years. He served four terms as Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, during which time the city was recognized as one of the most livable cities in America.

He was Mayor of Burlington Vermont...for four terms...population 40,000 back then. Our football stadium holds far more people. Do they allow blacks in the town? Vermont, one of the WHITEST states in the union. Over 95% of Vermont citizens are...white. That leaves 5% for ALL OTHERS COMBINED.

So...of COURSE you're not being racist but you're proud that one of the most livable cities in America...is totally white. (I don't believe a town of fewer than 40,000 people qualifies as a CITY.)

STFU, you stupid Nazi.  Sen. Sanders represents the interests of the individual.  At least the voters of Vermont have the sense to re-elect someone who has the guts to expose corruption, rather than put a known criminal in the governor's seat and "elect" a moron to the highest office in the land.  The fact that there are few people of color in Vermont has nothing to do with racism, and you know it.  Yes...a socialist is an "independent".

This thread is not ABOUT Rand Paul. I don't have time to praise someone who allows a dissenter in the crowd to have her head stepped on by a supporter.

Sorry Herr Markle ... but you lose again. The fact the most livable city in America is mostly white is irrelevant and has, in fact, nothing at all to do with racism. It ain't Mr. Sanders' fault that Vermont is primarily white. And, considering its perhaps the most liberal state in our decrepid, faltering union, you can rest assured the absense of black Americans isn't racism --all despite your amateurish fact bending. LOL

Actually it supposedly was ONE of the most livable cities. Nothing to support that assertion so who knows? I can't imagine anyone compiling a list of the most livable towns under 50,000 residents.

IF I'm "fact bending" as you say, then what I posted is untrue or at best twisted. So please, share with us what I posted which is not true.

Then share too the other "most livable" cities.
