Please don't tell me we're going to segue into an argument about how the government should ban soda.
Personally, I think one less idiot to contaminate the gene pool.

It sounds like this man died from water intoxication. It can really throw off a person's electrolytes. Commonly, it causes low sodium and chloride levels. Dilutional hyponatremia, to be precise.
If he was drinking diet cola, he most likely had problems with his calcium/phosphate balance as well.

He didn't die of thirst, he died of over drinking. It is as likely he died of the water as it is from the coke.
It's just a sad case of mental illness causing a death.

Right, it's a mental illness that causes severe bodily dysfunction. The article states the man had Asperger's Syndrome, but it's the first time I've heard of this sort of compulsion tied to Asperger's.

I have used both knives and forks to remove toast from the toaster, but I make sure it is unplugged first. No Darwinism here.

In this man's case, it sounds as if the psychiatric condition - the compulsion to drink liquids, be it Coke or water - was primary. His medical condition was secondary, and was a result of his compulsion to drink.
This is not an uncommon condition.
