One of the three people arrested by the FBI today was being charged with lying to the FBI. Law enforcement is allowed to lie to suspects during interrogation all the time. Why is it an arrestable offense to lie to the FBI?

The allegation is that the three knew Dzhokhar was a suspect in the bombing, went to his room and removed incriminating evidence, disposed of it, and then lied about it to investigators.

So, yes - in this case lying to the FBI was a criminal offense.
