It occurred to me you may not know the origin of the change to the senate... see the seventeenth amendment.

(yes... that is the progressive movement)

I'm aware of it and unfortunately how it was used to seize power at the federal level.

Excellent point. Few people realize the devastating affect changing the way Senators are elected had on America.

There is no way the states would be in the condition many are had it not been changed. The states have no representation and cannot fight all the unfunded mandates heaped on states and other regulations.

The Roman senate had delegates to represent both the patricians and the plebeians. The framers of our Constitution attempted to set up a similar system so neither group could overpower the other in creating legislation. Therefore our founders created a Constitutional Republic to protect both the rich and the poor (patricians and plebeians) from each others whims. That system has been bypassed and representation that should exist from the various states doesn't. Until balance is restored we're in the Bread and Circuses phase of the Roman Empire.

What's scary is, as I see it, right now we're sending our best to the seek the edge of the world as the emperors near the end of the Roman Empire did to those that might challenge their authority. Read about the legend of the lost legend or you can just watch a couple of the recent movies The Eagle or The Centurion. In the original legend handed down the legion was told to march east until they discovered the edge of the world because the commander was popular.

History tends to repeat itself.
