Sounds like your mother wasnt around to raise you.

Really, this gets very old. It is entirely not necessary, and folks are sharing information which is fascinating and informative. If you have something positive or interesting to add.......and you do have a wealth of information when you stay positive......please join in the fun.

Dreams,

How do extras get paid? By the hour? By the day? A flat contract amount for a set period of time? When she worked was she part of the Union?

Once a year she would send us clips of her scenes in various parts which was always pretty short but she would tell stories of the stars and their behaviors. Once they were filming a movie w/ James Brolin and Barbara Streisand came on the set. They were instructed to not look at her when she passed and to look down as she didn't like people to look at her.My mother said she looked at her when she passed and Streisand saw her but nothing was said to her. Strange woman,Streisand.

Nope. She didn't even start until she was retired.

Mr. Oats I'm trying to help here . . . . . I talked my mother into working as an extra and she was paid a flat daily rate. One one occasion we employed 5000 extras, that's hard when Flagstaff is 147 miles south and Cedar City, UT is 90 miles north. But they werre bused in from all around, put through wardrobe and transported to the set (Jerusalem) it was a long stressful week.

When you say put through wardrobe, did people give their sizes before they signed up, or was it like a mass cattle call matching people to available period costumes. Also, I may have missed what time of the year, but you talked about snow, and I was just in Flagstaff two weeks ago, and we just barely missed a big snowstorm. What elevation was the set, and being that the costumes were for a period piece set in a desert.....were people getting cold?

They were paid most times by the day whether they were in a scene or not. She was a SAG member as you must be. Once a year she attended the SAG awards in LA w/ limo and all. We laughed when she first said she was going to do it. She had an agent and he would call her and say they are reading for X part do you want to try out? She would then go read and she got a lot of work. She has been in the Princess Diaries, Hollywood High, Six Feet Under, movies of the week, Home Improvement. I can't remember all the rest but she loved to go to the sets and meet the stars. She was in her sixties when she started all due to them shooting a scene in San Diego for the movie "Mr. Jones" w/ Richard Gere. They shot a scene on the street w/ her car in it and paid her and that rest is history. She said I'm going to go into the movies. She does little theatre in San Diego also. She hasn't done a movie in the last couple of years but about five years ago when she was hospitalized for a surgery in which they punctured her esophogus she got gifts and cards from Melissa Gilbert, Diane Keaton and a couple of the others. Melissa Gilbert was President of the Screen Actors Guild and she was good friends w/ her. She loved her. My 17 yr. old granddaughter was speechless when she came to visit a few years ago and brought her pictures and clips w/ the stars. We never really had told her.

I know you are more than familiar with AZ, I lived in Page, 6 miles south of the UT border . . . . . elevation not really sure but I think equal to Flagstaff.

The wardrobe thing I had no direct knowledge of how they did what they did so well . . . . because of the biblical period and the peons basically wore rags I assume they had tons of rag costumes to get them dressed and out the door. If a close up shot of these extras was used they used extra attention to detail but the mass wide shots did not require the same. The set is now under water in Lake Powell.

Sidebar but interesting . . . . . they needed a white donkey and they looked high and low finally locating one in Missouri which was trucked to the location and Jesus rode this animal through the gates of Jerusalem.

What exciting bookends.......a young person getting an experience of a lifetime, and an older person living a dream. There are so many quality people who are artists who simply are brilliant. It is funny that you mention Diane Keaton because her movie with Richard Greer in Looking for Mr. Goodbar was one of those movies which left me totally drained when I left based on the shocking ending.......that is what the movies do, and one of those I considered putting on my list. I also like Casino and many others which have been listed. It is exciting for you to share these experiences, and I have so many questions.......but I have a tendency to get excited about minutia and silly things like......how do you get sandals for five thousand extras?

One thing I remember my mother said was how short Sylvester Stallone was. She was in the commissary line where they set up tables of food for them and turned around and Stallone was behind her in line. She said I was eyeball to eyeball w/ him and she is not quite 5'3".

It was a dream for her and I don't think she ever expected to get as much work as she did. She would call us and say watch so and so program tonight I'm in the whatever scene and sure enough she was. She was in a casket as a dead person on that HBO series "Six Feet Under" one time and said she had to lay there for 45 minutes and it was creepy. I watched that show and when I saw her in that casket it shocked me.

That is what I am talking about, and yes you can say anything you want to, and certainly you can attack me, but I am simply telling you that I enjoy your posts when you are funny, when you are witty, when you tell us about stuff you know about, and I enjoy those interchanges.....but when the two of you interact.....it feels like fingernails on the blackboard, and I am simply being honest with you.....and you are right....I have no right to scold you or expect you to be anybody but yourself, but I am just being honest with you and I certainly do not mean any disrespect. I enjoy people sharing things. I do not enjoy people being mean.....I have seen too much of that in my life, and with the time I have left I want to learn and share.....so please show me some of that positive and interesting side because I enjoy it when you are on a roll and are being funny.

As you can see her whining about people attacking her all the time is a falsehood. I was just replying to this thread and she started.

In a word (2) Desilu Productions, George Stevens was a perfectionist and would not settle for anything less than perfection.

I asked Bill Mellor, cinematography, how he shot the scene in Ten Commandments where death was creeping in the form of fog to kill the first born but those who had lamb's blood on their door were safe from this horror . . . . . simple he said . . . . . it was an interior shot and dry ice was placed under the floor and if they wanted it to go under a door (without lamb's blood) simply place the dry ice under the doorway and push the fog gently with a fan.

Now you got me hook line and sinker. I was a big six foot under fan as my wife was. I am having to sleep in the office some nights now because I work late and simply am too tired to drive home which is over an hour drive. What I have done, is set up a lazy boy in the office, and set up a laptop which allows me to get HBO from direct TV. They have all the HBO series online now, and if you can tell me what episode, I will watch it Tues or Wed next week. You have made my day because I have been watching the Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, and my favorite Curb.....but I was just thinking about starting in on 6 foot under. See if you can get the episode and season, and I will watch it.......the nature of the show is such that I will be looking at a lot of dead people before I figure out who your mom is........

I do not know if you have had a chance to watch the series the bible on the history channel, but I watched that scene just last week, and it was interesting how they used death as it entered certain homes.......you might want to check out the history channel this weekend and see what similarities between the two movies.

Dreams......you also need to stay positive, because when you attack her it is painful. This place is simply more fun when people offer their best, not their worse, and I enjoy her posts as I do yours when you both remain constructive and argumentative......not mean or personal. You can call me anything and insult me, but the two of you just continue to say hurtful stuff....it only takes one of you to put your mind to it and simply stop with the mean stuff. Again, I am only telling both of you how I honestly feel and you both can tell me to F off.

Page Arizona.......have not been there in over 10 years, but were you not in the news about a road collapsing? I have friends who have house boated for a week and had the time of their life. I heard somebody say that Arizona has the highest per capita ownership of boats in the nation.....in the middle of deserts.....folks have boats.

I took the time this last time through to stop at the petrified forest national park......I have gone by it 10 times and never stopped......I figured it was time. The last time I looked at water levels over at the west end of Lake Meade......they had to move the marina because of the water level drop. Are you seeing the same thing? It is a beautiful country, and you have some spectacular stuff within an hour of your home.

I don't honestly remember what episode it was but I will email her and ask her if she remembers what the episode was. I was a fan of that show and that was where Dexter got his start, Michael Hall, I think his name is.

Ever since this thread went up, I've been taxing my brain trying to decide which movie it would be if I had to pick a number one favorite. That's really a hard thing to do.
But after thinking about it for two days, if someone put a gun to my head and made me pick, I think it would have to be the 8th one down on seaoat's list.

I see quite a few people have Tarantino movies on their lists.

My favorite Tarantino film is one that is hardly ever mentioned - Jackie Brown.

I loved that movie!

Favorite comedy - Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
