This is just unbelievable that he made it up in the ranks as far as he did. If it's true that this was a deliberate act, he should be serving a life term in federal prison.

Think maybe that Vice Admiral James Dorsey(his dad) had something to do with him making it as far as Captain? He should not have been flying a desk, he should have remained a Lt J.G.

A Navy investigation called Dorsey's decision an “illogical act” that “raises substantial doubt as to his capacity for good, sound judgment.”
“The September 22, 1987, destruction of USAF RF-4C was not the result of an accident, but the consequence of a deliberate act,” the investigator wrote. “His subsequent reaction [to the radio command] demonstrated an absolute disregard of the known facts and circumstances.”
The Navy banned him from flying for life.
At the time, his father, James Dorsey, commanded the carrier USS America. He later attained three-star rank as a vice admiral.
The younger Dorsey reinvented himself as a Navy Reserve intelligence officer, earned a law degree, served in the war on terror,(WTF?) and was picked for a unit command as an admiral.

Absolutely his dad had something to do with it. There is no other answer. But I do not think it would happen today. There is almost a zero tolerance today for any kind of mistake.

Heck, he shouldn't have remained in the Navy at all. At the very, very least, he should have been kicked out. But if he deliberately shot down that AF plane, he should be serving time in prison.

I just asked hubby about this. He remembers it. Hubby was himself on cruise at the time....but on a different ship. But hubby did not realize the guy was still in the Navy.
