The Westboro Baptist Church is making plans to picket the funerals of two firefighters killed in duty in the Rochester, New York area. Margie Phelps, WBC spokesperson, tweeted,”They died for idolatrous worship-of-the-dead,” on Dec. 26 with a link to information about the funeral arrangements and the hashtag “#PicketFunerals.”

Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowkan were shot and killed while responding to a fire on Dec. 24. Two other firefighters, Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hoftsetter, were also injured. The gunman, William Spengler, also shot and killed himself. Spengler spent 17 years in prison after murdering his grandmother with a hammer in 1980.

The Westboro Baptist Church is infamous for picketing high profile funerals. People from all over the country flocked to Newtown, Conn. last week to form a human barrier as WBC members picketed the funerals of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.

Twitter user @donna_STFU made it clear to Phelps the town of Rochester would band together in the same way if Westboro Baptist Church attempts to picket the funerals for the slain firefighters.

So far, 1600 civilians as well as the Patriot Guard have pledged to form a human chain in order to block these Godless subhuman pieces of trash and their hate speech signs.

Those brain dead cretins are despicable.

Apparently a lot of other people think so too:

That would be nice. Right now they are enjoying tax exempt status as a church while at the same time spewing hate speech.

The slippery slope of constitutional "rights". Which "right" is good and which "right" is bad? Should we ban "hate speech"? Should we ban semi-auto weapons?

There are those who wish to ban both. I support free speech and I hope free speech supporters support my gun ownership.

I imagine the preacher goes around and collects from all of his "flock" as they stand around with their picket signs. Its all geared for him to make more money.

I fail to understand why so many people, including the media, insist on giving this tiny group so much free publicity. They are small splinter group made up mostly of family member from what I've seen. They look like they could be on one of those wild "reality" shows.

The Patriot Guard does a good job of protecting the families of fallen hero's from these clowns and keep it low key.

Perfectly stated. While I also despise what these people do "I respect their right to do so."

We, so far, have the right to protest it should we be so inclined.

Chrissy and Neko -

Do a youtube search for Louis Theroux's series on the Westboro gang. It's long, but worth the watch. There is no horror movie worse than Theroux's series here. I don't know how he stayed in the same room with any of them long enough to shoot the videos.

The total time is about three hours, maybe four. Several years later, he went back and interviewed one of the Phelps girls who made it out of the enclave. That youtube is there somewhere, too.

Why is it that people believe the 1st amendment is an absolute while at the same time believing that the 2nd amendment can be interpreted very loosely?

Why is it that people believe the 1st amendment is an absolute while at the same time believing that the 2nd amendment can be interpreted very loosely?

Neither is considered an absolute right, and both have been qualified by the Supremes. I have told this story before in the PNJ, but a friend is the brother of the Author the Band Played on, an HBO special about the spread of AIDS in SF. He went to his brother's funeral and Westboro was up close, and was a very large demonstration. Very....very.....unpleasant experience for his mother and other family members as the protesters were able to get right up close.....but nobody protested the protesters......well because I guess a gay journalist did not have much public outcry that the nasty behavior at a funeral mattered when it was only a journalist. It also was a much more direct protest of their thesis that gay people are evil and God's wrath will have to be paid.

My point is that they quickly learned that they had to escalate their protests and soldiers, children, and volunteer firemen do invoke a response from the public. They need to be ignored. The volunteers need to provide separation, and like the Nazis in Skokie free speech must be very carefully protected, but where that speech becomes more than speech and invokes public bedlam and the court finds more conduct than speech....then reasonable regulation as to time and place of the protest should be enforced. A 300 yard buffer of a funeral from protesters would seem to be a reasonable regulation which would allow the protesters to do their evil deed, yet give some solace to family members who would not necessarily have to directly deal with these protesters like my friend and his family did so many years ago.

Someone sent this to me

I recently read that the Westboro group is planning to picket the vigil of the Connecticut school shooting victims. As I read that report, I immediately thought about the message of hate that the group will spread during a time of great sorrow and grief. The WBC message is full of hate and void of grace. As I considered their commitment to spread a message of hate, it occurred to me that they should personally apply their own message before taking it to the streets. Is it possible that God hates Westboro Baptist Church?

The Bible refers to God's hatred toward sin. God's hatred is controlled, calculated, and righteous. You never see God in a fit of uncontrolled rage. However, God's fury and wrath is something to greatly fear for all unbelievers. That message is abundantly clear in Scripture. Consider the following statements about God's hatred.

In Proverbs 6:16-19 the Bible says:

There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, [18] a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, [19] a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

Out of this list of things that are an abomination to the LORD, WBC is certainly guilty of several of these points on an ongoing basis.

WBC appears to be guilty of having haughty eyes (a state of self exaltation).
WBC is guilty of having a lying tongue.
WBC may not be guilty of shedding innocent blood, but they appear to be guilty of 1 John 3:15 which states, "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him."
WBC is guilty of devising wicked plans.
WBC appears to be guilty of being swift to run to evil.
WBC is guilty of being a false witness who breathes out lies.
WBC is guilty of sowing discord with their hateful signs and messages.
Before Westboro Baptist Church shows up in Connecticut with signs that read "God hates you" - perhaps they should consider the possibility that God hates Westboro Baptist Church. Before they go and preach for people to repent, perhaps they should practice what they preach. Before they scream out to crowds of people to fear God's coming judgment, perhaps they should fear God's coming judgment. Self righteousness is a powerful trap - and one that entraps many people.

And let's not forget that writing a huge check to a PAC or politician is considered free speech.

That has happened in the past and the only result was they got even more publicity.

The Westboro Baptist Church is just one more example of the distorted mentality that develops when a society or group of people become isolated and are lead by one individual. Think David Koeresh and the Branch Davidians or James Jones " Peoples Temple" location in Guyana.

The two to three page typewritten note left behind by murderer William Spengler Jr. is described as taunting at times and is apparently leading law enforcement to understand how the convicted felon was able to obtain the weapons used to kill two firefighters and wound two others. Those guns are a Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun, and a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber handgun.

David Andreatta, DemocratandChronicle.com:

The note penned by William Spengler Jr. prior to his deadly ambush of firefighters in Webster explained how a female former neighbor and her daughter helped him acquire the guns he used in the attack, according to law enforcement officials with knowledge of the investigation.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Thursday that criminal charges against at least one, perhaps both, of the women were imminent.

How Spengler obtained the guns has been of intense interest to investigators because Spengler’s criminal history prevented him from legally owning firearms. He pleaded guilty in 1981 to a felony manslaughter charge for killing his grandmother with a hammer a year earlier.
