Coast Guard officials say an oil rig has exploded off the coast of Louisiana, sending four people to hospitals. Two are believed to be missing, and people on the scene are telling the Coast Guard that two people have been killed.

The Coast Guard confirmed with the New Orleans Times-Picayune Friday morning that an offshore platform is burning in the Gulf near the area of West Delta Block 32. The rig is about 25 miles southeast of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lally, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, did not immediately have information on the conditions of those taken to hospitals. Lally says two helicopters, an airplane and small boats were sent to the
area on Friday. He did not know if the fire caused by the explosion had
been put out yet.

The rig, a production platform owned by Black Elk Energy. This type of rig differs from the Deepwater Horizon rig,
which was drilling an exploratory well in mile-deep water well to the
east of Friday's reported explosion.

According to the company's website, Black Elk Energy holds interests in properties offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, located within Louisiana and Texas State and Federal waters with depths ranging from less than ten feet up to over 6,000 feet. They have an aggregate interest in more than 854 wells on 155 platforms located across 430 thousand gross acres offshore.Oil Rig Burning in Gulf
