If we are not vigilant, the seeds of hate and prejudice will raise its head fifty years after we thought we put this issue to bed.

I am accused of using race to explain too much in America......I simply have eyes, ears, a mouth, and a brain.....too much of the attacks against President Obama have been founded in irrational hate.

I have suspected that a large amount of votes for Romney were actually cast against Obama.

Sadly when we broach that subject on these forums it creates an immediate anger in folks who think all this was settled fifty years ago. It has not been settled and America needs to have an honest dialogue about the same. We are so much better than what was happening in that link. So much of the irrational response to the election results is grounded in hate and prejudice.

Every American has value, and our founding fathers in Declaring our independence began a process which some sadly think is a destination where we have arrived, but fail to recognize that it is journey and that all good Americans must be vigilant to evil, fear, and prejudice. This country has been blessed by God, and it is not time to turn our back on his teachings and ignore evil or politely turn our head, or not respond.

While there are pockets of racism dotting the landscape, the phenomena is now in large part confined to the South and Appalachia.

Obama managed to win the white vote in most of the battleground states.

The last vestiges of this scourge on our nation will die out over the next 15-20 years.

I agree with time it will be greatly reduced, but when one political party hard wires into that fear to advance political agendas.....well, the truth is that the machine which produces that poison must be destroyed.

2seaoat,

You do realize what was behind those reactions? It wasn't about racism...

It was about a school whose mascot was Col. Reb. The school decided to change their historic Mascot to black/brown bears. In other words, why were the school administrators allowed to change a century of tradition? For a PC reason which is faulty? Why can't Reb's be a mascot? Is it the warped history of the Northern Army Invasion of the South? Who cares?

If people were really concerned about being PC, then why is a Plantation owner Col. Sanders considered the chicken man?

You can-not force people to conform to any belief system. Ask the Romans....

Thank God slave traders financed and slaves built the Ivy League Universities. Otherwise there would be no hypocrites to look down their noses at us common people.. check their websites.

One question, why are the portraits of slave traders who financed the construction of the Ivy League University schools still allowed to hang in the schools? What about the slave trader endowed scholarships? Why is that?

Why not renounce the money, the association, the scholarships?

Do you even know which state owned the most slaves? I'll give you a hint. It was up north.

Get back to me when the Ivy Schools, you know, Yale/Harvard, realize their sins. BTW: They admit their sins on their websites. They don't talk about endownments....go figure.

Good job, though on the use of black people, unions refused to pay them an equal wage, UP NORTH. You know, Northern Racism, if not, what?

The university said in a statement Wednesday that the gathering at the student union began late Tuesday night with about 30 to 40 students, but grew within 20 minutes as word spread. Some students chanted political slogans while others used derogatory racial statements and profanity, the statement said.

Are you really going to tell me late on a Tuesday night when election results are announced and people take to the streets yelling racial derogatory statements that this was about a school mascot? Dog whistle rationalizations just do not cut it, and I know you know better. Can we agree that this has no place in America?

Don't insult me, and it has a place in America. Who are you to determine what has a place in America?

I offered you history. You can look it up before you tag me. Forget the "DOG WHISTLE" news flash, humans can't hear it.

You/ACLU/NAACP sue a University to remove a mascot? WHY??? Why not sue the families who built the Ivy League Schools? SLAVE TRADERS, they admit it.

Maybe the , HARVARD CRIMSON, refers to the blood spilt by slaves building the University?

Remember, the Yanks burned down most of the Universities in the South. Ask Bama fans.....

Take a pill and research the PC crowd......try to learn something....

I think, I know than some people just talk a good game when it comes to race.. They know all the words and phrases that they are supposed to say and for all outward purpose walk the walk. But deep down, they they still use race to quantify and qualify a position. Might not be against just one race but it is there. When you sit in a church that is 100% white folks, the message is clear to all who choose to observe. IMHO some people voted for Obama the first time because they thought it was the correct thing to do. wow!! It would be neat to have a black guy for president, that would resolve us from all criticism. Then they wanted to recant their choice and get the damn black man out of office. Racism is alive and well in many parts of the United States.
BTW Escambia High school was the "Rebels" when it first opened..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................The Escambia High School riots were racially motivated nonviolent and violent demonstrations which occurred in varying forms between 1972 and 1977 at the then-newly desegregated Escambia High School. The centerpiece riot, which received the most publicity and was the most violent demonstration, occurred on February 5, 1976.

Formerly an all-white school, Escambia High School was forcibly desegregated in 1969. However, the first black student, son of an active duty military officer, had enrolled in 1965 and attended Escambia without any incident whatsoever for approximately one year. He was welcomed into the student body by the school administration, and was assigned an escort to introduce him to the white students. He made friends quickly, was well-received, and attended until his father received orders and transferred. Several years later, in the fall of 1972, black students rioted at a home football game for their team, whose mascot was a "Rebel," modeled in appearance after the Colonel Reb of the University of Mississippi. The school band played the official school song, "Dixie," and it was from there that the violence ensued.[2] Continuing until the end of the 1972–73 academic year, blacks and other students protested the mascot, school song and use of the Confederate Flag, which was flown at school events and games, on the grounds that the imagery the items brought up were insensitive to black people. On July 24, 1973, a United States District Court ruling deemed all of the aforementioned symbols as "racially irritating" and barred their use at the school level (Augustus v. School Board of Escambia County, 361 F. Supp. 383, 1973).[3] At the beginning of the next school year, the name "Raiders" was picked to be the new name for all of Escambia High's athletic teams. Throughout 1974, the Escambia County School District appealed the decision, and on January 25, 1975, the United States Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the school board, overturning the injunction and decreeing that the school board should be in charge of the matter (Augustus v. School Board of Escambia County, 507 F.2d 152, 1975).[3]

On February 4, 1976, an impromptu school election was held in which students were allowed to vote to either keep the name as "Raiders" or change the name back to "Rebels." The students who preferred "Rebels" failed to secure a supermajority needed to win the ballot, and the next day, a riot ensued over four hours in the school day.[3] Four students were shot in the violence and twenty-six students were injured by rocks and debris while the calamity involved students smashing windows and trophy cases, as well as fighting with other students.[3] It was estimated that three-quarters of the 2,523 students who attended Escambia High were involved in the riot.[3] In the aftermath, crosses were burned on many school board members' yards, with one member, who was black, specifically targeted with a gunshot which went through his window. A human relations board member as well as a state legislator also had their homes torched.[3] After all the retaliatory violence both at the school and in the community, members from the Florida Highway Patrol and numerous local law enforcement agencies combined to patrol the school until the end of the year. While waiting for a final determination from the courts and the school board; the student body selected the nickname "Patriots" to be used at school sponsored events during the 1976-77 academic year. In the spring of 1977, after hearing the courts final decision that "Rebels" was not to be reinstated the students chose "Gators" as the permanent nickname. On July 13, 1977 the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) petitioned the Escambia County School Board to hold a meeting at Escambia High School. The Escambia High School Student Body president, John Davis, successfully argued against the petition before the board.[4] The board voted 5-1 against the petition.

Why do you bring up issues that don't relate? Nobody said a word about Pelosi.

You want to know how you start to fix it, how about real equality. Answer this, why is ethnicity asked on almost every federal form? How can we move past racism when our federal government can not. This past election one side demonized rich people, they divided the country between the have and the have nots. It worked because people were angry that someone had something they did not, someone was allowed to play by a different set of rules, someone was given special treatment because of their status. Now look at our society do we not have the same thing in our society based off of race? You wonder why we still have a problem with racism.

seaoats, there will probably always be racism.

Not easy to get around.

But you seem to be obsessed with it.

You worked hard one day to try and make me admit I was a racist. Didn't work did it? Not going to work now.

What are we really talking about when we say "Racism"? Is it when someone calls a Mexican " A damn sorry no good job stealing wetback' or a Asian "A slant eyed gook or is it when a Black person is called the "N" word?. Even here it would be bad form to use the real word. All of these are not good terms but one is definitely more emotionally charged.
The "N" word is what confuses many people, my self included Woe be the white person that uses the word in public. Red neck, raciest, crude, southerner are all terms that come to mind for one who udders such a word.
Yet I am supposed to over look the word when it blares out the stereo of a car at a traffic light or is repeated ad nauseam in the entertainment media by Black citizens.
Many times I believe it is used by Black people as a taunt to keep the Racism issue alive, May be , be not but it is how many people like my self perceive it. The use of a negative word by the same citizens who claim to be offended by it does nothing to advance their cause. In fact it appears to be the height of hypocrisy.

To quote Mr Alecto
"
How can you have an honest dialogue when it is always one sided. Every time someone wants a honest dialogue what they really mean to say is all white people are racist and how can we fix them. The other side of the coin is given a free pass. "

The problem seaoat is that you cannot plea for open dialogue in one breath and play the race card in the next.

That is meant to demean and diminish and discredit... it's an old tactic. It reminds me of the "red-baiter" proxy.

You can't be serious about open dialogue and play that card... not to mention the damage it does to a legitimate concern.

Not one person who posted acknowledged the root cause for what happened election night in Mississippi.......instead we were told that it was about a Mascot, affirmative action, and President Obama rejecting his white mother.....I am a poker player......I sit and observe people.....it is part of the skill required to consistently play the game and win.......and it is like last night when I had somebody telling me he had a 9, when two were exposed on the flop and we were heads up.....the problem was that I had a pair of 9s, so either he was lying and thought I was a fool, did not know how to read cards, or he thought he was being clever.....in any case....in the end the cards speak, and the response to this thread speaks to why some things happened in the last election cycle and why things will continue to be denied, or rationalized......avoid the truth.....divert.....blame.

Those that hope this will go away are kidding themselves....these were young kids who were taking to the street.....prejudice and fear is an inherited trait passed down from parent to child and not easily broken, but forever denied.

It was evident in the article what the root cause was, racism. You said you wanted an honest dialogue on the subject yet the tone in your post suggest the typical reaction when someone claims they want an honest dialogue, You want to talk about white people being racist and that is the extent of your honest dialogue.

Racism is not color blind. Blacks are racist, Hispanics are racist, Asians are racist, every race on this planet has racism in it yet you can only muster enough courage to call whites racist. You want to pick incidents of racism to chastise one group while ignoring the big picture.

Obama still sucks and it's just because of his politics and not his color, where he was born, or that daddy was a communist.

Had a Filipino girl in high school tell me that about one month into the relationship. We went to church together. That family was more racist than the KKK from what I determined.
