C.I.A. Arms for Syrian Rebels Supplied Black Market, Officials Say



AMMAN, Jordan — "Weapons shipped into Jordan by the Central Intelligence Agency and Saudi Arabia intended for Syrian rebels have been systematically stolen by Jordanian intelligence operatives and sold to arms merchants on the black market, according to American and Jordanian officials.

Some of the stolen weapons were used in a shooting in November that killed two Americans and three others at a police training facility in Amman, F.B.I. officials believe after months of investigating the attack, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The existence of the weapons theft, which ended only months ago after complaints by the American and Saudi governments, is being reported for the first time after a joint investigation by The New York Times and Al Jazeera. The theft, involving millions of dollars of weapons, highlights the messy, unplanned consequences of programs to arm and train rebels — the kind of program the C.I.A. and Pentagon have conducted for decades — even after the Obama administration had hoped to keep the training program in Jordan under tight control.

The Jordanian officers who were part of the scheme reaped a windfall from the weapons sales, using the money to buy expensive SUVs, iPhones and other luxury items, Jordanian officials said.

The theft and resale of the arms — including Kalashnikov assault rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades — have led to a flood of new weapons available on the black arms market. Investigators do not know what became of most of them, but a disparate collection of groups, including criminal networks and rural Jordanian tribes, use the arms bazaars to build their arsenals. Weapons smugglers also buy weapons in the arms bazaars to ship outside the country..."

The Obama administration is moving to dismiss charges against an arms dealer it had accused of selling weapons that were destined for Libyan rebels.

Lawyers for the Justice Department on Monday filed a motion in federal court in Phoenix to drop the case against the arms dealer, an American named Marc Turi, whose lawyers also signed the motion.

The deal averts a trial that threatened to cast additional scrutiny on Hillary Clinton’s private emails as Secretary of State, and to expose reported Central Intelligence Agency attempts to arm rebels fighting Libyan leader Moammar Qadhafi.

Government lawyers were facing a Wednesday deadline to produce documents to Turi’s legal team, and the trial was officially set to begin on Election Day, although it likely would have been delayed by protracted disputes about classified information in the case.

A Turi associate asserted that the government dropped the case because the proceedings could have embarrassed Clinton and President Barack Obama by calling attention to the reported role of their administration in supplying weapons that fell into the hands of Islamic extremist militants.

WASHINGTON, July 19 (Reuters) - The Trump administration has decided to halt the CIA’s covert program to equip and train certain rebel groups fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, two U.S. officials said, a move sought by Assad ally Russia.

We were initially complicit with Israel and Saudi Arabia who financed ISIS to stir the civil war in Syria. ISIS in Syria was an Israel and Saudi Arabia wet dream. We were complicit in that initially the Syria Civil war meant another terrorist state would topple.....millions of deaths later and we are budgeting close to 70 billion to continue expeditionary intrusions in sovereign states while killing millions of civilians.....the idea that Bush, Obama, Trump, or any other go along to get along MIC puppet will change things in the near future is simple dream like diversion.

We have spent seven trillion dollars and still counting on military adventurism in the Middle east while a million civilians are dead since our latest expeditionary adventure for MIC. We seem to forget what started this mess, and look for incidental matters to mask the political reality. Last Christmas Rudolph the red nosed reindeer kicked somebody in the head if they think these arms made a bit of difference in the tar baby called MIC which has us stuck perpetually in made up wars and conflict which expends weapons and ammunition.
