Texas senators who voted against aid for Hurricane Sandy ask for federal assistance ahead of hurricane Harvey.

Cruz said at the time he voted against the package because it was filled with spending that was unrelated to storm relief.

"Emergency relief for the families who are suffering from this natural disaster should not be used as a Christmas tree for billions in unrelated spending, including projects such as Smithsonian repairs, upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration airplanes, and more funding for Head Start," he said.

Karma or not, this disaster is a nightmare.   I'm glad the death toll is low, but all those people losing everything... it's horrible.

So far the people are stepping up.  Don't know about the government, so much, though.  Of course, Trump kind of hamstrung them.

Just a couple of weeks ago Trump rescinded Obama's executive order 13690 to make infrastructure more resilient to flood risks due to climate change.

He also cut $4 billion from FEMA and cut grants to emergency preparedeness and natural disaster response.   And cut $3.5 billion from the Coast Guard.

And, while Houston drowns, Trump tweets about his stupid wall (even while Mexico is offering help to Houston) and shills simpleminded child David Clarke's book... you know, the "sheriff" who wears a whole bunch of badges he got out of a cereal box?  Not to be confused with the actual criminal sheriff who Trump pardoned for racist crimes.   And he still bitches about his media "enemies" while CNN camera crews are using their boats to pull families out of flooded houses.

I'm hoping that despite all the preliminary fuck-ups and short-sightedeness, Trump will prove to be competent for once  in the coming days as this disaster gets dealt with.  It'll surprise me, but it'd be a welcome surprise.  This thing is grim.

You can call me a lot of things, beotch, but liar isn't one of them. Cruz and Cornyn voted against Sandy relief. Do your own research for once.

People Are Ripping Ted Cruz For Calling For Federal Assistance For Texas After He Refused To Vote In Favor Of Help For NY After Sandy

The devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Harvey has only just begun, as hard as it is to believe. Already, thousands of Texas residents have been rescued — including inundated nursing home patients — from rising flood waters and countless homes destroyed, all while CNN reports that the storm is expected to move back out toward the Gulf of Mexico, pick up more precipitation, and travel inland again to do more damage.

The people of Texas need help, and — naturally — GOP Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn are lobbying President Trump in support of Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for a major disaster declaration in the state. Here’s part of their joint letter, which they sent as Harvey prepared to make landfall:

“Given the potential catastrophic impact that the Hurricane may have on Texas communities, we strongly support this request and urge you to provide any and all emergency protective measures available by a major disaster declaration. We have been encouraged thus far by the work and strong coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deploy assistance to state and local officials on the ground in Texas.”
Such a plea from senators to a president is customary and, many would agree, necessary in the face of disaster. However, no one has forgotten that both Cruz and Cornyn are 2 of 36 GOP senators who voted against a 2013 supplementary relief bill geared toward helping Hurricane Sandy victims (mainly in New York) recover. At the time, Cruz defended his vote by complaining about additional “pork” added to the bill:

“Emergency relief for the families who are suffering from this natural disaster should not be used as a Christmas tree for billions in unrelated spending, including projects such as Smithsonian repairs, upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration airplanes, and more funding for Head Start … [we] should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects.”

In response to the current backlash, a Cornyn spokesperson told the Austin Statesman he supported a different version of the Sandy bill, not the one that ended up passing. Whereas a statement from the Cruz camp simply reiterated how the bill was “chock-full of pork,” which won’t win him any new fans in light of the new catastrophe. Indeed, he’s receiving the brunt of the criticism right now, and the below social media reactions function as indisputable proof that almost everyone intensely dislikes Ted Cruz.

Call Ted Cruz the "Microwave Kingfish".

I have family and friends up and down that coast. I know some of them already evacuated...not sure about my family in Katy (W of Houston) or my sister who was staying at an Assisted Living Facility in Houston. The Houston hospital where I worked overlooked Buffalo Bayou. I thing you were trying to be funny, but...save it, or send it to Pat Robertson.

From my point of view this is no time to make this disaster political. From what I have seen on the news the folks in the impacted area are in a fight to survive both physically and economically but I am heartened by the level of neighbor helping neighbor and this could be instructive for the rest of the nation.

As a veteran of many hurricanes on the Gulf coast I feel great empathy for these people, they are you and I . . . . . they are fellow citizens and they are fellow Americans. We must fight and resist the urge to embrace the venom that flows from our Presidents' mouth and turn to our better angels and help where we can.

Gov. Chris Christie on Monday called Texas Republican lawmakers “hypocrites” for demanding swift federal aid as Hurricane Harvey batters their state, when many of those same lawmakers voted against relief aid for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

“The congressional members in Texas are hypocrites, and I said back in 2012 they’d be proven to be hypocrites, it was just a matter of time,” Christie said. “We were the disaster that was the longest in waiting in terms of federal aid, and I hope that’s not what happens to the folks in Texas.”
