"I think many people in America are exhausted right now. I know I am.

Hateful people will do that to you.

You see, it’s difficult enough on our best days, to get out of bed knowing that there will be all sorts of adversity out there; unexpected challenges and unanticipated conflicts that we could never foresee or predict. It’s a Herculean undertaking just to be willing to brave that likelihood. It’s another thing entirely, to know for certain that you will experience spectacular hatred simply by choosing to participate in this current version of America. It is a given now.

When hateful people have power (as they now do), they embolden other hateful people, giving them license to unleash the God-awful things that they’d otherwise keep concealed and subjecting the rest of us to a regular cavalcade of horrors. This is what our country is experiencing in these days: a Renaissance of open bigotry—and it will level you if you have a working heart.

The other morning I saw a picture of a middle-aged man at a convenience store with a t-shirt that said, GRAB AMERICA BY THE PUSSY. My first thought was, “What on earth is wrong with him?” My immediate follow-up questions were about his wife or children if he had them; about his parents, friends, boss, pastor or church. I wondered how someone becomes the kind of man who would see a GRAB AMERICA BY THE PUSSY t-shirt and think, “This is just what my wardrobe is lacking!”

And I grew weary..."

Good people cannot fatigue in the battle against evil. There is only one response. Tenacity and rejection of hate speech and actions. I sat at a poker table where this otherwise good Davenport Iowa fireman was hateful toward Oriental players who did not speak English very well and kept close to a thousand dollars on the table when they play. I sat silently when he and the female dealer bantered about them not paying taxes and owning small businesses where they cheat to get their money. I usually can use humor and say "sir that is my wife playing at that table", instead I was way down and wanted to keep playing without a confrontation. Wrong answer. When people can openly display hate in front of strangers and fear no push back, then good people have simply not done their duty. I was not going to change anybody's prejudice and fear, but I could have done the right thing and make them at least know I did not approve. Maybe deep down I also get a little piszed with the showboating, but to stereotype an entire people.....no my fatigue at the late hour was no excuse.

I'm having a horrible problem with my neighbor, and it made me think about the problems you had with yours. The danger is becoming what you hate. I am not that person, and I figure she will implode on her own. I tried to be a good neighbor, but she attacked me in one of my darkest hours, and I will not forget it...plus she doesn't have the nerve to confront me. Karma.

I can relate, FT, and am sorry for your travail. I, too, had a terrible problem with a neighbor a few years back, someone who was supposedly a friend but turned out to be a manipulative user. Long story, but the rift was never healed despite my offer to talk it out at the time (same as your neighbor, she was obviously too chicken to 'confront' me - and that's likely because she knew she was wrong).
My husband is convinced she's bad-mouthed me to everyone else in the neighborhood. I'm not sure about that part, but am definitely glad she lives a couple of houses away and not right next door. I keep hoping she'll move away. If I were rich I might move myself. I try not to think about it (or her) any more. Exhausting is right!

Yes this is all exhausting. Many a TV news or opinion program has kicked off with a phrase similar to: Well, it's been another exhausting year this week in DC politics. The implication being that this administration with its ricocheting policy statements and overt threats, disrespect of allies and love of everything Russian is truly exhausting.

I cannot imagine a time when the man cited above would be caught wearing such a T-shirt in public.

Leadership matters especially among people who apparently do not have a well developed moral compass and instead rely on cues from whoever is in the WH at the time. This president's behavior and choice of many who feed him corrosive information is giving the signal for all like minded people to crawl out from under their rocks. The Internet is providing many digital rocks and digital communities. Social media and Twitter have made it easy for people sympathetic to unsavory views to virtually meet up and support each other.

We see problems in Virginia today with demonstrations turning to violence. The public appearance of hateful, violent and racist expressions can be traced directly to the influence of statements made by Trump on the campaign trail and into his presidency. From encouraging crowds at rallies to beat up protestors to his wink-wink at a law enforcement meeting recently suggesting police need not be so careful in the way they handle suspects under arrest, this national display of intolerance and disrespect can be traced directly to Trump. Too bad there are those who respond to his lead.

Okay you grow weary but far too many armpit state mouth breathers would vote that swine into office. That's the trouble with America today.
