College Republicans issued an invitation to a fascist provocateur to incite a reaction, and they got one.

Predictably, black bloc anarchist infiltrated the peaceful protest and smashed windows, threw bricks at the police, and lit fires.

This is wholly unacceptable criminal behavior, and it will feed into the right's narrative of victimhood.

In this new era of mass protests and assemblies, progressives will need to find a way to separate themselves from anarchists with completely different agendas and bent on destruction, or the backlash from the middle class will be enormous.

Who are these people, Sal?

"...In a statement, the university said: "The violence was instigated by a group of about 150 masked agitators who came onto campus and interrupted an otherwise non-violent protest."..."

*******

It seems that this speaker was scheduled in order to provoke a protest, as has happened numerous times in the past. Who's to say that the few protesters who caused property damage were from the left?

This fits right into the Trump play book.  There was a reason that the peaceful marches of the 60's led by the followers of MLK Jr. held classes in non-violent protest inspired by Gandhi. Violence turns public opinion against whatever the protest is about. It is to the credit of the Women's March and protests at the airports protesting the travel ban have all been non-violent.

Civil unrest will not be a problem for the Trump presidency. It will be a resource. Trump will likely want to enflame more of it.
In true police states, surveillance and repression sustain the power of the authorities. But that’s not how power is gained and sustained in backsliding democracies. Polarization, not persecution, enables the modern illiberal regime.
