I guess Mitt didn't do his homework on the most important swing state before he made the 47% comment.

CNBC report: Florida gets more federal funds than any other state

The Sunshine State is Uncle Sam's favorite.

Florida receives more federal funds than any other state, both in total dollars and on a per capita basis. In fact, based on total volume, Florida's take is 50 percent higher than No. 2 Texas.

According to an analysis by CNBC.com, Florida received $577.8 billion in the 2011 fiscal year, or a whopping $30,318 per capita. Rounding out the top five in per-capita payouts were Louisiana, South Carolina, Hawaii and Virginia.

The analysis included federal money used for government operations — distributed both to government agencies and contractors — as well as money for entitlement programs like Social Security, unemployment compensation and food stamps.

Most of the biggest awards Florida received came through Homeland Security, the umbrella organization for everything from FEMA to port and airport security. Other large awards came through the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Medicare and Medicaid, among other duties.

Well, that's your opinion and it has no relevance to me. It's just as dumb as your posts.

When the nutties wake up, perhaps they can tell us about Florida being a donor state.

I suppose Florida has been #1 over quite a period of time? In other words this didn't just happen under Obama's administration.

Social security has to be a major factor here.

Sure. Still, 6% of the US population consuming 16% of the Federal budget is astounding.

Homeland Security is at the top of your list. But really--is Homeland Security putting money into the pockets of that many Floridians?

I guess I think there is a big difference between **Homeland Security (is this because of airports or what??), Medicare and Social Security (People collecting these benefits paid into the system) than programs like Food Stamps and Subsidized Housing.

**Maybe because of FEMA? If so, I also do not think a natural disaster is the same as welfare.

It pays government salaries. Also, it facilitates economic benefits like tourism and shipping....the salient point being, Florida requires a lot of Federal dollars to function.

Florida functioned before Homeland Security and even FEMA, didn't it? How long has FEMA been around?

**FEMA was established in 1978.

Yes, but HS is the new reality. What would happen to tourism and the state budget if FL could opt out?

I don't know but it would be an interesting experiment.

Florida is beginning to tighten....it really will not matter with Ohio and Wisconsin lost, but if anybody in the two county area does not think federal dollars being cut in defense are not going to have a devastating impact on this area......sprinkle a little more fairy dust on your computer......we are going to get whacked.......and yes Florida is on the teat of the Federal government, and you will not see either of these candidates telling the truth about what is going to happen in Florida.

We missed major hurricanes one more year, but the reality is that in the last 100 years Florida has accounted for 1/4 of all homeowner insurance claims......and on top of that 16% of the federal budget.........we have the most to lose with the truth......and that is why the truth is seldom told in politics in Florida.
