PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Holy Cross Metropolitan Community Church on Pensacola has been broken into eight times in five months, three of the break-ins happened in just the last two weeks.
Each time, the damage is more extensive. This time, the burglars removed plywood off a window to get in.
"The shed outside," said Wade McLemore, food distribution ministry leader. "They destroyed it. There was no puttin' it back together. They didn't just break a lock and come in."
On Sunday night, the burglars took about $500 in property and food from the church's storage unit and pantry. Food bought, collected and donated intended to help people in our community in need of a helping hand. A helping hand the church won't be able to extend, at least for a while.
"We take a lot of pride in doing with Jesus commanded us to do," McLemore said. "To feed the homeless, the needy, the widows, the orphans. Those are the types of people that it's gonna be impacting the most."
Ever week on Wednesday, approximately 100 people stop by the church for a food distribution ministry. Due to the recent series of break-ins, the program has been suspended indefinitely.
McLemore has run the food ministry since May and is sure the ministry will resume, though he's not sure how it will happen.
"We do plan on re-opening," he said. "Absolutely. Without a doubt."
Church staff is re-evaluating ways to continue their work and stop the break-ins. They hope to beef up security by adding surveillance cameras and are considering relocating their food distribution location.
If you have nay information about this or any of the break-ins at Holy Cross Metropolitan Community Church, you're asked to contact the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
