Way to twist my words  Rolling Eyes

I think "service" in our country's armed forces should be limited to those willing to volunteer to serve ... otherwise, it's not really "service", now is it?  It's slavery.  (You must be one of those so-called Progressives)

I disagree with the government compelling military service or community service on anyone.   Are we a free people or not?  What does the idea of individual liberty mean to you?  Not too much I s'pose?

Next you'll be wanting to compel "national service" to build a pyramid for Obama's tomb, I s'pose.

Compulsory labor = slavery.  Get it?

In any case, the liberty/freedom argument aside, conscripts do not make the best soldiers.  This is not 1917.

" massive armies of barely trained infantry are a relic of the past. Today’s wars don’t require large numbers of warm bodies, but highly trained specialists using advanced equipment. Missiles, bombers and carriers don’t require very many people to operate, but those people need to actually be well-trained. The only real use for large infantry regiments is the occupation of foreign countries and the suppression of domestic rebellions. And improving the army’s ability to do that seems to me a big negative."  (I copy/pasted that from elsewhere, not my words)

Even an infantryman nowadays requires a lot of advanced training & skills, and most importantly .... a want-to attitude.

Conscripting a bunch of just-out-of-high-schoolers who don't want to be there and just biding their time till ETS just won't work nowadays.

I appreciate your point-of-view but you are still in lala land; there is value in conscripting our young adults to give service to the country and grow up. It is pure nonsense to believe that it is good that our nation rely on a handful of soldiers who volunteer believing that in itself is justifies their merit. We need a strong and formidable military and spreading the responsibility across our nation's demographic makes so much sense. I have grand daughters who are good high achieving kids but honestly if they had to fall in line to serve in the military they would be light years ahead of where they are because they too are in la la land . . . . life is hard and this service prepares them for life in general. Slavery? BS . . . .
