Now that was a crazy contraption. The pilot who was test flying it would have helped himself to take a couple of lessons in a standard helicopter before trying to fly that thing. He was having to teach himself the art of hovering--the first thing a helicopter pilot learns. Learning how to hover a helicopter is like trying to learn how to ride a bicycle. You are a bit wobbly at first and you will fall down a few times, but once you learn how to do it, you never forget it.

The pilot managed to hover the machine in ground effect, and maneuver around close to the ground in a rough air-taxi. The real test would be how high and how fast it will go, and how controllable it is. Then, how do you handle emergencies--I sincerely doubt you can do an autorotation in that thing if the battery runs out while still in flight.

Overall, it was pretty cool to watch. Definitely home-made, for sure. I bet most of the useful payload is taken up by the weight of the battery pack needed to power all of those little rotors. It looks like the battery pack was slung beneath the seat the pilot was sitting on.

It amazes me what people think up....I would want a ballistic parachute if I went very high...Maybe an extra chute in case the first one failed....maybe I will just stay on the ground....
