I am surprised this didn't have an article in the daily update I get emailed from Aviation Week magazine (I am a long-time subscriber to the magazine).

Maybe it was because the Marines called the incident a "hard landing" before they upgraded it to a Class A mishap. The aircraft was destroyed by fire and the crew chief was killed. There were 21 souls aboard the aircraft altogether when the mishap occured.

The Marines have been paranoid about the Osprey program ever since Dick Cheney tried to cancel the program back in 1989, when he was Bush41's SECDEF. Roll in the lengthy development process and several accidents during that phase; they are jittery about this aircraft's reputation.

Only time will tell if the MV-22 has a better/worse safety record than the aircraft it replaced, which was the CH-46.

The aircraft was from VMM-161, the "Greyhawks," Based at MCAS Miramar, near San Diego, CA (MAG-16/3rd MAW). They apparently were deployed at sea with the 15th MEU when the accident happened during a stopover in Hawaii.
