American Taliban kills successful birth-control program in Colorado Afghanistanvillagers

Republicans in the Colorado Senate killed an effort this week to set aside funding for a birth control program that provides IUDs to low-income women.

The Colorado Family Planning Initiative has been praised for contributing to a 40 percent drop in teen births over the last five years. The program, previously funded by a private donor, won an award in Washington, D.C. just days ago. The Durango Herald reports:

Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, brought the award with him to the hearing, just before the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee killed the bill on a 3-2 party-line vote.

“We have the will to make this program successful,” Wolk said. “The will of the governor, the will of a number of legislators, the will of evidence-based organizations … who say long-acting reversible contraceptives are safe and the preferred method of birth control for these young women.”

The bipartisan House proposal wanted $5 million in funding to give IUDs to teenage girls. Rep. Lori Saine opposed the House bill, saying the program encouraged more sex.

“So in this scenario, the government is subsidizing sex… because a woman typically doesn’t get birth control to hold hands and watch re-runs of ‘Gilligan’s Island.’”
