Blue Wahoos park a winner-depending on who you ask

I read this in that stupid newspaper today. Idiots.

Blue Wahoos park a winner

In Miami, on the site of the old Orange Bowl, the National League’s Miami Marlins played baseball this year for the first time in their $500 million-plus stadium, complete with a gaudy-even-by-Miami-standards home-run display, a nightclub, swimming pool and an aquarium.

In Fort Myers, the Boston Red Sox opened spring training this year in a stadium built to look like their iconic home, Fenway Park, complete with a Green Monster wall in left field.

Yet the winner for the park of the year award, at any level of baseball, was our park: The Community Maritime Park, home of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

Anyone who has been to a Wahoos game this year can understand why, especially those who attended the Opening Night, when the reflection of the moon danced off Pensacola Bay and the Blue Angels came streaking across the water from the east. It was, and has been all season, a piece of Pensacola heaven. A piece of baseball heaven. A piece of our heaven.

And just like in the movie, it was built, and they came. The Wahoos led the Southern League in both attendance and percentage of seats sold. The Wahoos’ customer service was lauded again and again by locals and out-of-towners. And we were treated to excellent baseball, with the added plus of being part of a iconic major league franchise, the Cincinnati Reds.

Now, the Double A season has closed. Players will scatter; some to the majors, some to instructional ball, some to play in South America. But the memories of this first season will always remain.

We the taxpayers built it. They came, and not just the fans. The Reds came, and so did the praise from fans.

Oh, and about that aquarium at the Miami ballpark?

“We have the largest aquarium in the world right outside the outfield,’’ said team President Bruce Baldwin.

“Pensacola Bay.’’

me:

First off, Pcola Bay is NOT an aquarium. It does not meet the definition of what an aquarium is. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-an-aquarium.htm

"An aquarium is a specially designed device that acts as an artificial habitat for water-dwelling animals. Although most people associate an aquarium with tropical fish, aquaria can also be used to house amphibians or large marine mammals. In addition, many aquaria contain a variety of plant species."
