That was an interesting summation of the intricacies involved in the problems found in the M/E. It's also telling that several country's are aligning themselves against the Shiite ruling class in Iran. I would lay money down that most Iranians just want a chance at employment and enjoying a "normal" life. They have toyed with revolt but didn't quite make it, yet. The Iraqi army finally stood up against ISIS in Tikrit, Saudis are bombing in Yemen (and didn't forewarn the U.S.) - what this is proving is that the countries involved can take of themselves better without our involvement.

And they need to....

I saw film on TV news of a USAF pilot interviewed  -- the female captain pilots an airborne tanker and has been refueling Saudi Fighters over Yemen.  We knew about SA's action in Yemen!!

Bingo......it is not isolationism if we become more precise in defining critical areas of American interests.

I was mistaken, the U.S. had a "brief warning", I was recalling another news mention several days before that they didn't include us in their initial planning. Regardless, I'm just glad they are taking the lead for once and not us.

"The Saudi Arabian-led intervention into Yemen's civil war Thursday was remarkable for both the size of the coalition involved and the speed with which the plan coalesced. The U.S., which withdrew its last special operations forces from Yemen over the weekend, had only a brief warning that Saudi airpower was about to be unleashed."

I admire Robert Parry and read him frequently. He appears to understand US foreign policy better than most, or at least is more honest in his reporting. But I have a problem with this statement:

"...Over the past decade, the Israelis and the Saudis have built a powerful alliance, a relationship that has operated mostly behind the curtains. They combined their assets to create what amounted to a new superpower in the Middle East, one that could project its power mostly via the manipulation of U.S. policymakers and opinion leaders – and thus deployment of the U.S. military..."

I believe the Saudi/Israeli alliance predates 9/11...and that Israel has thrown the Saudis under the bus.

Robert Parry writes very good essays on political topics.
