The cost of renovation will be twice the cost to build the facility, which was constructed in 1997. It had problems from the gitgo with leaks and its original date of opening had to be delayed.

Which contractor built this dinosaur, and who gets the blame for this?

From the article:

"...Complicating the issue is that GSA does not own the courthouse, but leases the building from a private company. That lease is set to expire in July 2017, at which time the city of Pensacola would take over ownership, unless GSA were to exercise its option under the lease to purchase the building...."

This should be easy. Stop paying on the lease while the building cannot be safely occupied. Then, refuse to buy it from from its private owners.

Here is where the PNJ needs to do some investigative reporting, and tell us who those private owners are. Did they put their own money at risk when they built this boondoggle?

Investigative reporting would require an investigating reporter!

An 18 year old facility which could now become all American's property in just over a year, will magically revert back to the City of Pensacola and the citizens of Pensacola will become owners of the building, because in a triple net lease the austerity of government would not fix some leaks and replace some drywall.

Judge Rogers may have excuses for why these repairs were not completed and how stupid the series of reports have been where nothing was done, but one only has to follow the logical consequences of abandonment of this federal building.....Federal taxpayers will pay many times more for a "new" building and the City of Pensacola will be the beneficiary of a 10 million dollar building in the heart of Pensacola......follow the money. Other than the natural tendency for the judiciary to want to build new palaces for their comfort and egos(the Florida Appellate Court boondoggle) this smells rotten.

Apparently, this building was shoddily-built from the beginning. I wonder who the contractor was, and if any local contractors did any work on the project. Who oversaw construction (likely some engineering company)? And who are the private owners?
