The VA and/or the Air Force would offer him appropriate mental health counseling if he would avail himself of it. The pastoral staff at his church might also help him. PTSD is treatable.
No matter how bad things might be for you, there is always someone just around the corner from where you are who has it worse. I count my blessings daily and take nothing in life for granted.
