“Is it possible that 1.6 billion people (Muslims worldwide) should want to kill the rest of the world’s population—that is, 7 billion people—so that they themselves may live?” he asked. “Impossible.”

Speaking to an audience of religious scholars celebrating the birth of Islam’s prophet, Mohammed, he called on the religious establishment to lead the fight for moderation in the Muslim world. “You imams (prayer leaders) are responsible before Allah. The entire world—I say it again, the entire world—is waiting for your next move because this umma (a word that can refer either to the Egyptian nation or the entire Muslim world) is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost—and it is being lost by our own hands.”

“We have to think hard about what we are facing,” he said. “It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire Islamic world to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing, and destruction for the rest of the world.”

Might be time to put away the broad brush.

This individual is indeed a hero in my book too,  Sal.
But I'm not sure that's a reason for us to just dismiss the opinions of the leader of a nation which has a 95% Muslim population.  Especially since el-Sissi is himself a lifelong Muslim.
I think what he's acknowledging is that a radical form of Islam has now gotten out of control.

For those not familiar with him, we are very fortunate to have a talented syndicated newspaper cartoonist living right here in Pensacola. His name is Andy Marlette. And this cartoon represents his opinion of what happened to his colleagues in Paris.

Not dismissing at all, Bob.

Just adding to the conversation regarding the mistake of using a broad brush to depict all of Islam.

Nicely drawn, but not particularly insightful.

This is one of the better cartoons I've seen regarding the attack in Paris ...

Until the psychotic faction of these folks gets a nuke or a few nukes. That's when 1.6 billion=rest of world population.

Karl I agree changing them would be as hard as changing you into a peace loving person. Nukes are all that change folks like you.

Sal's math ability sucks if he thinks one of 1.6 billion is enough to stem the tide of Islamic fundamentalism.

I'd love for their to be a day when folks like me doing the things we have to do are not needed. As long as there is evil in the world and people wanting to kill our citizens, I will have a job and so will my brothers and sisters in the military. I'll be retired before that happens so it won't be on my watch.

Thinking that all Muslims share collective responsibility for the crimes of individuals and are presumed terrorist sympathizers because of their faith is the very definition of bigotry.

You are a bigot and a moron.

It is for me and it likely would be for most of the millions who are in the streets of Paris today.
I think it conveys the events of the last few days quite succinctly.

It's a fine cartoon, but I don't see the insight.

The only message seems to be that the terrorists were rats.

I think that's an insult to rats.

No, I am a realist who doesn't have his head in the sand like you and many others. One out of 1.6 billion calling for change isn't enough.

You're all for the Muslims policing their own, so why aren't you encouraging them to take on the radicals ?

I agree. It's an observation of irony. I interpret the message to be that, each time an Islamic radical intentionally commits mass murder of innocent civilians, it's causing the WHOLE religion (as represented by the background mosque) to go down in the world "approval poll".

But don't miss something interesting. Go back and look at the first Marlette cartoon I posted again. Both artists chose to put bright red blood on monochrome drawings.
I wonder if that's just one of the latest trends in cartooning style? Or it's just a coincidence? I don't take in enough cartoons to know.

Sal

It's a dramatic effect.

Hospital Bob

VERY dramatic.  The blood having the only color puts all the emphasis on the sheer human toll.  That's because a large pool of red blood is probably the simplest and most universally recognized image there is to convey injury and death.
And contrasting it against everything else which has no color I think is a statement that any and every other consideration is secondary.
