Why did Obama's literary agency say Obama was born in Kenya in his published bio?

I'm trying to understand how it could make an error like that. It wouldn't just get something like that out of thin air. It would seem likely to me that information it puts in Obama's bio would come from Obama or someone close to Obama. And why would they have said that if it wasn't true?

Just asking a question. I have no idea what the answer is. And I honestly don't really care where he was born. If he was born in the U.S. it's not going to help preserve my medicare benefits and if he was born in kenya it's not gonna do that either. Which is the only thing I care about with this government anymore.
The whole thing is no more than just another curiousity to me.
