(Reuters) - Senior congressional Republicans on Thursday called for a halt to a U.S. tax rule rewrite that would affect powerful political pressure groups, charging that the overhaul could be politically motivated by the Obama administration.

"Abandon this proposed rule," 11 top Republicans said in a letter signed by House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner and sent to Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen.

"Finalizing this proposed rule would make intimidation and harassment of the administration's political opponents the official policy of the IRS," the letter said.

The demand was the latest jab by Republicans at the Obama administration in a fight over IRS treatment of conservative political pressure groups organized under tax code Section 501

This is and always was about halting the IRS investigations into GOP dark money. And that is the real scandal. Thorough investigations would lead to disclosure of anonymous "gifts". Why else would Republicans want to prevent a rule change at this juncture that could only lead to an improved electoral process?

Of course it is. Democratic have 501(C3) groups, too. However, Republicans are in it up to their eyeballs. Nobody should be able to exploit this rule.

Yes separation of church and state except for money. Goodness knows we don't want churches free to discuss anything the government might find distasteful....like say the corrupt hideously hypocritical government.

WAY to much fun to be real!

Why in the world would Republicans, or any other honorable American trust the IRS and their friends to write new rules?

These are the same folks who did this....

The IRS Conservative Targeting Scandal involved:
•Hundreds of conservative groups were targeted
•At least 5 pro-Israel groups
•Constitutional groups
•Groups that criticized Obama administration
•At least two pro-life groups
•An 83 year-old Nazi concentration camp survivor
•A 180 year-old Baptist paper
•A Texas voting-rights group
•A Hollywood conservative group was targeted and harassed
•Conservative activists and businesses
•At least one conservative Hispanic group
•IRS continued to target groups even after the scandal was exposed
•10% of Tea Party donors were audited by the IRS
•And… 100% of the 501(c)(4) Groups Audited by IRS Were Conservative

Do it. Get rid of dark money. Also make sure that no matter how much you contribute to a campaign, you are revealed. No more under $200 donations as anonymous.

I also would like transparency in GOV elections.
