In a speech he gave this afternoon,  he singled out a new Pensacola Bay Bridge as one of only eleven major infrastructure projects nationwide.
You heard it here first.

Why do we need a new bridge? They just built the one we have after Ivan.

Infrastructure was only designed to last 50-60 years. This is not a surprise event. Over 50,000 cars cross the bridge on normal days. The Garcon bridge has few and far between crossings.

Which Wingnut is going to be the first to say President Obama is only doing this for political purposes? in a Congressional District that has been Republican for 20 years...

And you know Congressman Miller will be all for it.

It's my understanding that pickup-trucks driven by men wearing camo hats and with their radios blaring Travis Tritt won't be allowed through the toll gates.

Too bad ...

Well, if true kinda sucks for SO's theory that Bama man hates our district.

Bridge planning has been under way for months....you can not accelerate construction until placement is decided.

Word on the street is that the State wants to make the new bridge a toll-bridge. I'm glad I don't live in Gulf Breeze or go out to the beach much.

After all, a fiscally-responsible citizen would favor the new bridge having less of an impact on the tax payer......

My kids and grandkids are native Breezers....We all live here and I can't imagine living any where else. When the kids were away at college they couldn't wait to get back home.

Hard to imagine if you have never lived here.

Bingo......but expect the President to be blamed on placement.

As to the President suddenly finding the Panhandle as friendly country where he will scratch their back.....that is funny. You have a serious scandal in VA, and the house chair of veteran affairs is Miller, and the Senate is Bernie Sanders......geeez you would figure people understand the Chicago way by now. The general stays and this terrible screw up in Az goes to page 8.

The replacement bridge has been studied and planned for the past five years. As joani said the final decision as to its placement but there will not be a toll according to the FLDOT . . . . it replacement is consistent with Obama has been saying for a very long time . . . decaying infrastructure does not have political boundaries and rightfully so. The only mistake that is being made is not capturing the opportunity to solve long standing congestion on Hwy 98 and GB proper by building a bridge that would overpass GB and terminate in the GINS . . .

Like Gulf Breeze wanted years ago....instead we got Bo's Bridge to no where .

The Garcon bridge is necessary. The bondholders and bankruptcy court need to set workable tolls. If a new bridge could branch off and connect with Garcon, but environmentally and aesthetically it would suck, and would be very expensive. The new I 10 bridge is a beauty.

Yes it was. It was necessary to pad the pockets of politicians and their cronies.

The only sensible plan would be to put the southern terminus of the new bridge into the far western edge of the live oak property and then connect it directly into the Bob Sikes Bridge. Thereby bypassing Gulf Breeze.
But of course that can never happen because of the clout the merchants in Gulf Breeze proper have with the politicians.

Bo and his family owned the property on both sides of the bridge. Much of it wetlands that could not be developed. It wa profitable.

The way I understand it Tex Edwards owned a big chunk of land over there too.

Sounds like reid out there in nevada with his interchange... and congressmen allowing themselves to insider trade.

We better get a grip on our govt.

Exactly . . . . it's a shame to not design for the future . . .

Oh, my mistake. I take it this would be a new Three Mile Bridge? I thought it was another I-10 bridge going over the bay, the one going from Pensacola to Milton.

That's exactly what it is. But it's not a democrat only thing. Don't forget the bridge to nowhere in Alaska. And Trent Lott's four lane divided highway that went from Gautier to the middle of nowhere. Those were republicans.
