I have two favorite musical groups from my youth.
One American  (The Allman Brothers Band)
One British  (The Zombies)

The British group I never got to see perform.  They came to Pensacola in 1965 while on a twin bill tour with the Yardbirds. And I have always regretted not being at that concert.
By the time (1968) they had recorded their seminal album entitled "Odessey and Oracle",  they had broken up.
They reunited in 1999 and I never thought I would get to see them.  But I learned they would be in Birmingham last Wednesday night so after all these years I got to see them perform.

When I first heard this record on the radio in December 1964 I was 15 years old.  I've loved it ever since.

Bob,

I have some questions. How much were the tickets? Did any other groups headline with them? What was the general age of the audience? Thanks.

It was in a live music club called Iron City in downtown B'ham.  It has a stage and a large open dance floor in front of the stage with tables and chairs surrounding it and a wraparound balcony overlooking the stage with tables and chairs.  Tickets were $30.  There were all ages in the crowd but mainly geezers because this music is mid-60's.
An opening act did the first set. And then it was only the Zombies from then on.

We don't wanna stick it to anybody, teo. We're all in this together. Have been for many years now.
We all need to start respecting each other a little more. For us, life's too short for nonsense now.

respect ...isn't that reciprocal ? kind of like gays making fun of "breeders"...where's the mutual respect THEY demand ?

Yes respect is mutual. And it applies to both parties and all parties.
You need to have more respect for bds and he needs to have more respect for you.
And I need to have more respect for markle and he needs to have more respect for me.
And politicians and talking heads and people need to have more respect for each other.
And we all need to show more respect for each other in all these threads and try to curtail the constant name calling.

My mother and father were "breeders" and any idiot who would call someone a "breeder" had a mother and father who were "breeders" too. lol

It has to be an exciting time for young people. First, there still is wonderful music being produced, and second to discover quality music from the past has to be a fun adventure.

This comment will never be understood here.

Yesterday, yella and I went to the Equestrian Center to watch a get together of horse lovers running and jumping their horses.
On the way to get there we listened to rap on the radio and were digging it.
The radio mounted to the bottom of the kitchen cabinet in my kitchen
is now usually tuned to an FM rap station.
Yella is 78 and I'm 65.

Two years ago I discovered Mumford and Sons and became a total addict to their music......I do not think age has anything to do with the appreciation of music. I remember after my wife and I were first married. We would take her parents out to eat and have drinks afterwards. We were in this small town bar, and there was some "modern" music on and this 85 year old lady was up dancing with a partner and she was so absorbed in the music and was moving that old body like nothing in my life had experienced. I was still in this time warp that older people did not get "our" music, yet this lady was in a zone.....she had become one with the music and she was almost sixty years my senior. I will be playing poker, and in the background will be a song I have not heard in years and I find my hand and fingers tapping out the beat, when I next hear somebody arguing that I had checked.........music is powerful and soulful.

You'll notice those two kids making the comparison between Odessey and Oracle and Sgt. Pepper, seaoat. A lot of music critics are now making that comparison.

A little trivia about that. In 1968 when the Zombies went to Abbey Road Studios in London to record their album, the Beatles had been at Abbey Road not long before that recording Sgt. Pepper.
Probably the most distinctive thing about the music on Sgt. Pepper is a musical instrument called a Mellotron.
It was an invention of the 60's and Lennon and McCartney discovered it while recording Sgt. Pepper and made extensive use of it on the album.
When the Beatles finished recording their album for some reason they left their Mellotron at the studio.
Rod Argent (Zombies keyboard player and songwriter) found the Beatles Mellotron and was immediately taken by the sound it made too. That's why it's also used so extensively in some tracks on their album.

Here's McCartney demonstrating the Mellotron. Especially listen starting at about 2:20 and you'll learn where that distinctive sound on Strawberry Fields Forever came from.

I had asked you those questions because a friend and I have discussed putting on a music festival for three days which would put together older groups who are now touring. My friend sold his business a year ago, and cannot find investments which get the kind of return he received when operating his business. We have gone to booking sites and see many of the old groups are quite reasonable......as little as four to eight thousand dollars for some.

You could put quite a line up together, but the question both of us have is will young people attend? Older babyboomers are not going to want to deal with the discomfort of a typical three day music festival, and without young people, it will be a huge financial hit. Now perhaps a Friday night, all day Saturday event might allow the oldsters to find hotels, but my question to you was how long was the Zombie's set? If you go to their website they only have a few american venues booked this year. I am seeing the Moody Blues booking the Casinos all over the country as they have found a nice niche where older baby boomers can have the comfort of the casino hotel, and enjoy their music.......we are both dead serious, but clearly neither of us have the experience to promote music, and it is a minefield for the inexperienced.

We were talking to one of the venue's employees while waiting at the head of the line for the Zombies show.  She was saying the ticket sales had disappointed her bosses because only 400 tickets had been sold.
I wouldn't think showcasing this music is very lucrative anymore. Not enough commercial appeal for it (it's now beyond the oldest age of the advertising demo for example).

What I can't imagine is a $12,000 gross at the box office (400 x $30) not being enough to make these entrpreneurs happy when you consider the "concession" prices.  In this case of course "concessions" being alcohol which is priced at full out bar retail.  And a lot of alcohol is consumed at these venues. More than than the amount of popcorn sold in a movie house.
