Ichi,  I want to thank you from the bottom of my pea pickin heart (which you may or may not remember is another reference to old tv).
I've never before learned the story of how Groening soaked up all that early tv and how that played into The Simpsons.  In fact I don't think I've ever seen him talk about all this.
For a media junkie like me,  it's like the discovery of a rosetta stone.
And you found it.

As Tennessee Ernie Ford would say "Be sure to watch parts 2 and 3"

Hell me and Ford are both from East Tennessee so we're expected to know about pea pickers.
But when somebody comes out of the westside of P'Cola and also knows about that, it's pretty damn impressive.

LOL A wasted life... and thanks....

I apologize in advance for this slight derail.  But it's not really a derail when you think about this being on the radio about the time Leave it to Beaver went on the tv.  And the fact that it rose to the top of the pop charts when rock and roll was first taking over.
I've never heard a more communicative song lyric.  The words were written by a Kentucky country singer in 1947.  But the power of the words and Ford's vocal interpretation of it remains an all-time classic. And the theme of it is all of a sudden very timely today. lol

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you
Then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

First one is for Mr Bob

Groening is from Oregon,  Ichi.  But he relates to the same thing you and I do.
Why?  Because we all watched the same television shows.
Radio had somewhat the same effect earlier.  But television was the thing that REALLY started to give us all the same perspectives regardless of region.
After the country came back from the war,  the advent of television began to bring us all together.  Really for the very first time.  And that isn't hyperbole and isn't overstated.

There's no mention of obama in the thread. No thread can survive
long without that.
