A friend and former coworker wrote this Viewpoint against the hatchery in the PNJ on 2/7/14:

http://www.pnj.com/article/20140209/OPINION/302090021/Viewpoint-Hatcheries-wasteful-use-resources

She has a degree in Marine Science and knows what she is talking about. The habitat in the Pensacola Bay System is very degraded; not just from industrial inputs, but from overdevelopment of the surrounding watershed. She claims that the money would be better spent trying to improve the habitat so it can support more fish.

Ashton Hayward's Viewpoint this week was a narcissistic piece that was more self-glorifying than factual about what the hatchery might do for our community.

The PNJ unloaded both barrels at Hayward in today's newspaper, both in a front-page article and an editorial. I thought it was cute.

The hatchery is a huge plus for the area. The specific location is now going to endure the usual circular firing squad of Pensacola politics......when they are done.......there will be nobody standing and probably the project will be lost at any location. I have on vacation visited the fishery on Lake Mead when I visit the Hoover dam, and it does make a nice stop if it was tourist friendly, but everybody in Pensacola is smarter than who is in office, so I expect the circular firing squad to begin.

What the naysayers are saying is the local ecosystem is too degraded to support millions of newly released fish. It won't be a plus if they are released to just die. What the scientists who can see past this thing are implying is that perhaps the money would be better spent improving the habitat so fish can live in local waters without needing a hatchery to plus up their numbers.

Another example of downtown people kicking others in the Ass. Fuck the black people they don't need a swimming pool, lets tear it down. Same old shit, just a different verse.

The fish hatchery’s location has, also, raised some concerns for African American heritage preservation. The City of Pensacola built and managed the municipal swimming pool for Black community access for swimming classes and recreation activities at Bruce Beach during the late 1950’s and the 1960’s. The pool was a very popular recreational spot for children and adults and served as a way to stop the accidental drownings in Pensacola Bay off the beach’s shore. Located in south downtown Pensacola off of Main Street the area was known as the “Tan Yard” named after a shoe tanning factory located in the neighborhood.
