If he is half as good as the coach Ward I knew, it will be a good deal. The guy was a legend for us that grew up in Pensacola in the 60/70s. A damn good guy.

Death: Oct. 2, 2006

Daniel V. "Shorty" Ward, passed away October 2, 2006. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death.

Daniel Ward was born in Pensacola November 19, 1923. He often said that he was born in the historical Old Seville district when it was called "hysterical" Ole Seville. He was born to William Daniel and Mary (Love) Ward. He grew up in Pensacola and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1943. He was nicknamed "Shorty" because he stood a head taller than most of his friends, but he always said it was because he was always short on money and short on conversation. That nickname stuck throughout his life. At Pensacola High School, he was a multi-sport athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. Shorty was the star quarterback of the PHS football team and at his high school graduation received the Fleming award for Best All-Around Athlete for his achievements on the field.

After graduation, Shorty would always brag that his Uncle gave him a new wardrobe and a trip over seas. It was Uncle Sam, the wardrobe was a uniform and the trip was to India to serve in World War II. After his military service, Shorty followed good friend Jimmy Haynes to Western Kentucky University where he attended college on a football scholarship and the GI bill. It was there that he met his "bride", Betty Topmiller and in 1949 they were married. Shorty received both a bachelors and masters degree from Western Kentucky.

With his bride, he returned to Pensacola where he was a teacher and coach at Warrington Junior High. He then became known to all as Coach Ward. He later returned to his alma mater Pensacola High School as a coach and dean. In 1970, when Escambia County began public school integration, Coach Ward went to Booker T. Washington High School as Assistant Principal. He played an important role in the smooth transition of bringing students from different schools and backgrounds together as one student body of Mighty Wildcats. Through his years in education he touched many lives through caring about each and every student as an individual, helping many with clothing, shoes and timely bits of wisdom. Mr. Ward retired with his wife in 1988 after serving 38 years in education.

Along with his great impact on the many that grew up in Pensacola, Daniel Ward also impacted his community through his service and leadership. He was the first president of the Northwest Florida Kidney Foundation ('72-'73). He served as President of the Greater Pensacola Kiwanis Club ('85-'86) and enjoyed Kiwanis club breakfast time each week. At the First Baptist Church he served as an usher, a member of the Recreation Committee, a member of the Friendship Sunday School class and he worked each Tuesday at the church's Samaritan Hands ministry. In 1996, Daniel V. Ward was honored as a Kentucky Colonel along with his football team at Western Kentucky.

Shorty always enjoyed life with his wonderful ability to see the positive side of every situation. During his retirement years, Shorty enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing golf with his buddies, playing bridge with friends and playing tennis with his "Over the Hill" group where he was famous for his close line calls.

Shorty leaves behind wonderful memories that he made for all who knew him. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Betty Topmiller) Ward, his children, Beth (Rusty) Rood of Pensacola, FL, Jim (Cheryl) Ward of Birmingham, AL and Becca (Joey) Boles of Gulf Breeze, FL. To his grandchildren Ruston Rood and Rebecca Rood of Pensacola, Danielle Ward and Tyler Ward of Birmingham and Bayleigh Boles and Brooks Boles of Gulf Breeze he was known as Papa. He also leaves behind two sisters, Lois Spray of Deltona, FL, and Mary Lou Mullen of Pensacola, FL, nieces and nephews along with many, many friends, good buddies and ole' buddies.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday October 5 at First Baptist Church, 500 N. Palafox St. at 3pm. Visitation will be prior to the service at 2pm with extended visitation after the service until 5pm. Daniel V. Ward will be laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery in a private ceremony.

My first thought when I heard the name. Shory t was a friend and fellow football player with my uncle. They remained friends until my uncle's death. Very special man.

I was just starting my Junior yr at FSU in 93 when Ward was QB. What a great team we had. I am sure he will do well as their coach. It should be inspiring for many.
