Sorry if my post caused you any distress. That was not my intention.
When I first retired I volunteered for the Red Cross. I was a Disaster Assistance Team member. I went to where people had fires and offered them assistance. A room for 3 days, couple of hundred dollars, Etc. No much but it helped. It was just too damn hard to do. I only lasted a year or so. Some people had lost everything. House, pets, clothes, you name it. The damn smoke is the worse, even if they get the fire out quickly the smoke damage can be huge. I have a lot of stories so I try to warn people when I can. It is bad down here because it dosent get that cold very often. Lot of People use space heaters and they can really be dangerous if you are not careful.
One Christmas eve I was called out to a mobile home fire. It was very cold. the lady's home burnt almost to the ground. She escaped with just what she was wearing, a battered house coat, and her 2 children. I did what I could and fudged the numbers to try and help a little more. It was gut wrenching to converse with someone who had very little, have absolutely
nothing.
Not tiring to kill the Christmas spirit Just trying to bring some issues to light
The spirit of some people is truly awe inspiring. I had a call out on Jacks branch road. A young couples hand built home has suffered major fire damage. The young husband was in a wheel chair. I introduced my self as the Red Cross and told him I could offer some assistance. We talked for awhile then he said "We will be Ok. Save the money for someone who really needs it" I thought God Damn if you dont need it, Who does? He remained adamant on refusing assistance so after a while I turned to leave. Then he said "There is one thing you can do. Could you go the store and get me a pack of cigarettes? I can not find mine" I bought him a carton.
This is not about me but a tribute to the people who still do this job. I could not do it. Reality was too harsh.
