There are some interesting comments under the article about mother animals that eat  their own babies. Some people say that no mothers in nature ever eat their own babies. Hamsters do. I know that for a fact because I've seen them do it.
I don't give too much respect for anything in the rodent family.

My opinion on the photo? When a baby gets teeth, quit breast feeding them.
Gerber makes baby bottles that work fine.
Stabbing your kid is probably not  the best training method.

Some mothers keep breast feeding their kids because they enjoy it themselves and not for the baby's health.

Poor little baby. And the mom still has custody of him. Mad  He is only 8 months old which is not too old to still be breast feeding. When mine were babies the docs recommended breast feeding for at least a year.

Did you breast feed your babies for a year?  When my children were born the doctor said that 6 weeks of breast feeding was plenty long enough for them to get the antibodies from the mother that they needed to be healthy children. Anything longer than that was absolutely not necessary.

Why do you care how long I did?
Most American doctors recommend a year. Of course, if 6 weeks was enough for you, that's your business.

Actually, it was the pediatrician's business at the time to give out advice.
I don't think any doctor would advise a woman to breast feed if her baby has teeth and is biting her. The woman's blood goes right into the infant's mouth and makes the child sick.
That's a medical fact.

All pediatricians would agree with that.

On edit- somebody is going to say they make breast shields for a woman who wants to keep nursing a child with teeth.
For anyone who makes that comment, I've known of breast shields being penetrated by a baby's teeth too.

I guess it's okay to breast feed a 6 year old in some cultures. One of the women on Game of Thrones does it. LOL
I prefer the gay guys having sex  on the  show to the Lady Arin's breastfeeding her little boy.  She's a whole lot grosser.

It's a mother's choice to breastfeed or not. But babies can usually be trained not to bite.

If you didn't like breastfeeding, it's probably just as well you stopped early.

LOL  I don't believe I ever said I breastfed.

I do take an interest in my children and what their pediatrician recommends though. Every good parent should do that.

Well, then I would say if breastfeeding completely repulses you, it's probably better you didn't do it at all. You just seem awfully opinionated on the subject for someone who never did it.

There is no down side to breastfeeding beyond the first year, on the contrary

LOL I never said it repulsed me either.

I said that if you watch Game of Thrones, there's a character on the show who breast feeds her son who is probably between 6 and 8 years old. Yes, the show actually shows her dropping her gown and the kid latching onto her.

The scene is meant to repulse the average viewer. It does a good job.The kid interrupts her while she's talking to tell her he wants her milk.

Maybe you'd enjoy watching it though. Who knows?
You may not be the average viewer.

You may be the Great Earth Mother.  How would I know?

From the CDC Website on breast feeding:

When should a baby start eating solid foods such as cereals, vegetables, and fruits?
Breast milk alone is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months after birth

How long should a mother breastfeed?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mother and baby desire. The World Health Organization recommends continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.

Oh forget it.

Well, let's see....there's a lot of difference between an 8 month old and an 8 year old. I never claimed that mothers should breast feed for 6+ years and doctors don't advise that either.

As I said originally, 8 months is not too old to still be breastfeeding a baby. And babies can usually be trained not to bite. There is absolutely NO excuse for stabbing a baby. None, whatsoever. It was not as if the mother only had the choice between a. should I stab my baby? or b. should I continue to breast feed him?

My oldest is nearly 30 and this is what my doctor advised back then as well.

I see nothing wrong with breast feeding past a year and it's common in many cultures.   It's my personal belief that sometime before a child starts kindergarten, he should probably be weaned though.  lol.

I can't claim to be an expert in this field, but breast feeding a 30-year-old is clearly beyond the pale.
