As I look back on Memorial Day...the most touching remberance for me was in Hawaii. Ceremonies began at 8:30 am in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and ended with a beautiful ceremony at Magic Island Ala Moana Beach, Waikik Hawaii. 30,000 to 40,000 people celebrate on the beach while live-stream video reaches thousands more.

Lantern Floating Hawaii allows people a personal moment to remember, reflect and offer gratitude to those who have gone before us. It is also a collective experience where families, friends and even strangers reach out with love and understanding to support one-another.

As Memorial Day approaches, it is time to pause and consider the
true meaning of this holiday. Memorial Day represents one day of
national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died
while defending our Nation and its values. While we should honor these
heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to
securing our Nation's freedom, we should honor them especially on
Memorial Day.
In this time of unprecedented success and prosperity throughout our
land, I ask that all Americans come together to recognize how fortunate
we are to live in freedom and to observe a universal ``National Moment
of Remembrance'' on each Memorial Day. This memorial observance
represents a simple and unifying way to commemorate our history and
honor the struggle to protect our freedoms.

I'm surprised that the celebration does not include the Arizona Memorial.

I have not been to the Punchbowl. But I've been to the Arizona Memorial. It's very sobering.

It is touching to see so many visitors at the Arizona Memorial in tears.
