You're right. Newberrys did sell some records back then. That was a neat store. I loved going in the little room in the back where they had the birds in the cages. Yes, I'm a senior citizen. I guess I can't talk about times that old without admitting it. I'm not sure if you know who Ed Ames was (he played an Indian on the Daniel Boone TV show.) He was a great singer too and he also signed albums outside T & C Plaza records one time. I got his autograph on his "My Cup Runneth Over" album. It wasn't country but it was a great song.

Bob you don't have to tell me about Papa Ding dong diddledy de daddy, debatable darin' digging out dashing dip digging Don Shroeder.

I listened to him but I was more of a WBSR fan of Mike Ionne.

He was of course the inspiration for the "Conrad Birdie" character in Bye Bye Birdie, which was the earliest stage/movie sendup of rock and roll.

This is considered by many, including yours truly, to rank among the best rock and roll ballads of that era.

I'm gonna crawfish here a bit . . . . . . Miranda Lambert won female vocalist of the year and I have to say she is so R-E-A-L which adds a dimension not to mention that she writes her own music. So I'm a fan of this gal . . . .

bluemoon,

Do you remember the "Beach Bash"? That was at about the same time. Leroy Morris was the DJ. On saturday afternoons he did a live radio show on the back patio at the beach Casino.

Here's a special song (and singer) from that era:

You might call it crossover. I really don't care what genre it is. I wonder if any of us really appreciate the music we took for granted then...and afterwards.

You just posted my favorite record. Go to youtube and put in "roy orbison black and white night". You'll find every song from the show including the version of Only the Lonely he performed on it.
It is THE best rock and roll concert video every produced. And that includes The Band's Last Waltz concert (although it's a close second).

.........................................

Because the only black folk involved are ushers...?

Today's so-called country music for the most part, sucks like a Hoover.

Proving I'm older than all of you put together, the first "favorite song" I remember was Tennessee Waltz. I learned the words by heart which must have driven my folks nuts. I was a little tyke.

Orbison had to deal with some dark stuff in his life.
His wife was killed on a motorcycle and after that his two sons burned to death in a housefire which burned up his home.

If you're gonna do country, don't overlook the voice of all voices.

Oh yes, my Ol' Man enjoyed country music. I guess that was a little unusual since he was born and raised in Chicago. He went into the service and was a DI and taught motor pool until he went overseas. He lost his leg after three months in the Battle of the Bulge and spent two years in a Texas military hospital. Maybe that's where he picked it up.

Thanx Bob. This thread started me surfing youtube tonight. Headphones, awesome videos....yep, this day is pretty good.

This takes me back to singing in the car while traveling. Dad was quite talented...we had no radio...the rest is music history.

It is hundreds of times harder today but celebrities have always lived, and died young with no worse or better problems everyone of us have endured. Their lives, their fortunes depend on them being lived out on the front page across the nation. Little surprise that 27-28 seems to be terminal velocity age for so many.

Yes, and I suspect why you're laughing about the Mike Ionne reference is you might remember the little squabble he and our local sheriff had over somebodies wife that ended in a shot being fired. No, can't remember the beach bash. I remember the WBSR team was known as the Good Guys though. I won an orange sweatshirt with that logo on it one night. Did you ever call in to the stations at night and get caught up in the crossed phone line scene? Somehow back then the lines would get crossed and you would end up talking to other kids that had tried to call the station too.

I had forgotten that for 50 years until you just made me remember. That was a hoot.

It was fun. Glad to jog your memory. Midnight conversations with complete strangers didn't seem so scary back then.
