Read a lot about him in the "Prodigal Soldiers" book about 7-8 years ago. Both he and Gen Colin Powell were a core part of the military that helped to reform what they saw as incompetentcy in the Vietnam Era leaders who plunged the US deep into Vietnam despite the warnings from others.
