(Thom Hartmann:)

Without Clean Elections There Is No America

The polls all show that Joe Biden is winning the presidential race in a landslide, but Americans are worried that Donald Trump will nonetheless steal this election.

Americans have been told to tolerate the fact that a man who lost an election by 3 million votes sits in the White House.

It’s astonishing that we treat as normal the possibility that massive voter suppression in a couple of states can lead to the loser of an election becoming president.

It’s bizarre how little value our news media assigns to democracy itself.
Americans tolerate the Republican Party engaging in voter caging, throwing people off the voting rolls because they didn’t send back a postcard.
Americans tolerate the Republican Party making the very process of voting long, tortured, and difficult, particularly for working people paid by the hour.
Americans tolerate the Republican Party sending armed gunmen with swastikas and confederate flags to intimidate people at polling places.
Americans tolerate an administration that has destroyed over 600 multi-million-dollar high-speed mail sorting machines so mail-in ballots won’t arrive in time to be counted.

The Trump administration and the Republican Party have committed a number of horrible acts.

They’ve put refugee children in cages, and kept them there for years. They’ve minimized an infectious disease that has killed over 200,000 Americans. They’ve gutted funding for the environment and and worker safety. They’re destroying our national parks and selling off our public lands to frackers, drillers, and miners. The list goes on and on.

But none of this is as destructive to this nation as ripping apart our elections.
The Republicans on the Supreme Court just made it much harder for mail-in ballots to be counted in South Carolina. In Texas, the governor has ordered that there can only be one, single ballot drop box for a city of over 4 million people. And Trump is constantly telling us that the election is rigged and the vote can’t be trusted, a naked attempt to demoralize voters and diminish faith in America.

We live in a democratic republic. For such a form of government to work, elections must be fair and accurate.

The GOP’s Jim Crow efforts to suppress the vote in dozens of Republican-controlled states from Florida to South Carolina to Wisconsin to Texas are all, in actuality, efforts to suppress democracy.

Trump’s Republican party today is threatening the very core of American values and the American way of life.

Without a functioning democracy, nations inevitably spiral downwards into autocracy and authoritarianism, and eventually into tyranny. We’ve seen this in country after country, as strongman dictators rise around the globe to destroy democracies.

This year, it’s not just Republicans, Democrats and third parties on the ballot. It’s the fate and future of democracy and a republican form of government itself.

I'm honestly amazed Trump's even considered eligible to run after that performance. Nobody's ever been so clearly unfit for office. I think Republicans know it, they just can't stand to lose to Democrats when they hate them to such a pathological degree. Really, I think a lot of the people who vote for Trump will be secretly relieved when he loses. They've got to be exhausted and humiliated from trying to defend this shit, and they've got to be afraid of what kind of damage he'd do if he got another term. We're just so mired in "team sports" that they can't stand to quit playing it, even when the survival of the country is at risk. And it's too humiliating to admit that they made such a colossally stupid mistake that they don't realize it'd be more embarrassing to make it twice.

Really, I don't think anybody outside of his brainwashed idiot evangelical cult really wants him to win again. The whole country's worn out putting up with him.

I can't wait for all the sneaky stuff he did to get revealed once he isn't able to keep a lid on it anymore. This country is in for some shocks, I think. O' course, a lot of 'em will remain in denial about it. They'll cling to their fictitious conspiracies and try to excuse it all away.

"Don't let coronavirus dominate your life". I'd like to punch him in the face. Coronavirus has dominated EVERYONE's life. I'm 70 and trying to work with my grandson on remote learning. It's not going well. He will have to go back to school Monday. I will still have to pick him up from school and bring him to my house with my at-risk husband. We will deal with it, but it's scary as hell.

My granddaughter is here, too. She may be going back in a few weeks. I am so damn tired of this MF trying to dictate to America. He can KMA. He is going down, and then he's going to prison, along with his enablers.

Document your assertions or STFU. Let's see: Biden wants to raise taxes on people who make $400,000/year or more. Iraq and Afghanistan = BUSH'S WARS PATRIOT ACT: GEORGE W BUSH and REPUBLICANS. Surge: GEORGE W BUSH and REPUBLICANS. BANK BAILOUTS and "TOO BIG TO FAIL": GEORGE W BUSH and REPUBLICANS.

Anything I didn't address here you're going to have to prove. Or just STFU.

LOL, for crying out loud how ridiculous can you be??? A virus killed 220K people and there really isn't anything that could have been done. You do know this virus is a pandemic affecting virtually every country on earth and most of those have the same problems as here. Taken at face value you could vote for anyone. Give it a rest.

Thanks to Trump's incompetent "let's pretend it doesn't exist" response, the United States -- a country with the most resources for fighting pandemics -- is doing worse than almost every other country on Earth. So quit making excuses for this asshole. There is a LOT that could have been done, but wasn't. Other countries took those measures and the virus is minimal there. Nearly every other country on the planet did a better job with this. And most of the ones who didn't -- such as Brazil -- also had right-wing conservative leadership. Face it, you guys just really aren't good at anything.

The U.S. has nearly a quarter of the world's total COVID deaths, while having less than 5% of the world's total population. That's a colossal fuck-up by any objective metric, and it's not just "bad luck," it's due to incompetent response.

I know Trump embarrasses you because he makes conservatives look like morons, but if you don't like it, stop electing morons. So far y'all seem fucking addicted to 'em.

Take a look if you can, at the places in this country with the highest Covid death rates and you will found they are predominantly liberal (Democrats) cities. I agree the Trumpet is a moron who never says the right thing but I'm objective enough to realize the burden of the pandemic response rightly belongs to state and local governments. If you were smart you would do what I do, just IGNORE the Trumpet and hope he goes away. I'll be curious if Biden is elected and acts just as as stupid as Trump whether you will post the same criticisms. Doubtful.

That's not exactly true that the places with the highest Covid rates are all Democrat-run. Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida are typically the states with the most cases, and they're definitely not "liberal" states. A lot of Democrat-run cities have higher rates... because they're cities. Higher population, more densely packed, the more it spreads. And a lot of those cities have been beseeching the Fed for help but Trump strands them because Trump's not governing anyone except those who support him. He and Stephen Miller gloat over letting California hang, for instance, because they think it's a "Democrat state" (even though 40% of it votes Republican, just as around 40% of Mississippi votes Democrat).

There is no chance of Biden acting just as stupid as Trump. There's little chance of anyone acting as stupid as Trump. The only leader I know of on the planet who even compares with Trump's malefic stupidity is Bolsanaro in Brazil, and that's one of the only countries doing as badly on the pandemic as we are. Hell, even Boris Johnson, who gets dismissed as an idiot by any metric, looks like a statesman compared to Trump. I'll likely ping Biden if he does dumb things that aren't just cooked-up by conservative conspiracy-media, but, really, the possibility of anyone governing as badly as Trump, be they Democrat or Republican, is slim. Trump is a prodigy when it comes to idiocy and malfeasance. I'm actually surprised more Republicans haven't bailed on him.

Speaking of, I'm wondering what the hell Trump has on Lindsey Graham, because Lindsey had a spine there for a while. Then Trump took him golfing one day and ever since, Lindsey's been a lapdog, and it's just odd. I'm certain it's some kind of blackmail, I'm just wondering what. I'm hoping it's not that "lady G" gay-escort thing, because, really, who cares? Everybody's always figured Lindsey was gay anyway, and nobody really worries about that anymore. Getting escorts is a bit sleazy, but not worth the amount of blackmail-acting he's doing. If he let himself get blackmailed over just that, I'm really going to be pissed at the guy.

That is a damn lie and you know it.  He could have taken it seriously...as Woodward reported that he did, in "private".  Instead, he publicly tried to play it down as a hoax, politicized the wearing of masks and social distancing, flaunted violations CDC protocols, sent 17.8 tons of PPE to China and let the states worry about their own health professionals.  He is guilty of depraved indifference and he has killed people.  Now HE HAS IT, according to reports.  And he has definitely infected those around him.  Other countries have notably had more success than the US in combatting the virus.  Trump is supposed to lead; instead, he was calculating his political advantage.

Covid in the U.S.: Latest Map and Case Count

At least 1,004 new coronavirus deaths and 90,728 new cases were reported in the United States on Oct. 29. Over the past week, there have been an average of 77,865 cases per day, an increase of 42 percent from the average two weeks earlier.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 9,078,400 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 229,200 have died, according to a New York Times database.

Pretty ghoulish to subject him to this stress.
