There were some three million or so Arawak Indians living on islands in the Caribbean sea when jolly old Columbus first came ashore. By 1515 here were approximately 50,000 left. By 1550 there were 500 still alive. By 1650 the Arawaks were extinct.
The Arawaks died from two causes: 1) European diseases for which they had no resistance, and 2) Slavery.
Columbus and his officers forced the men to work gold and silver mines, leaving all agriculture to the Arawak women. On average, an adult male lasted no more than six months under the harsh conditions enforced by the Spanish conquerors.
In several villages the indigenous people chose mass suicide rather than continue as Spanish slaves.
Columbus's arrival and subsequent actions present an open and shut case of genocide -- the most severe of crimes against humanity.
Considering there are a number of white racists who read this forum, enjoy your celebration of Columbus day. The white Europeans who first came to what would become North America, began their own program of genocide against our indigenous peoples.
If you're a white Christian racist, I suppose there's plenty to celebrate.
As for myself, I'm delighted that so many of us are beginning to seriously question the morality of our beginnings. It's about time!
