Crist would be a far better choice, but I'm not sure better choices matter anymore. Sane Republicans are a dying breed now that the party's stopped being a party and become a cult.
The major chunk of the people who call themselves "conservative" actually just want to live under a theocratic dictatorship, and now that Trump showed them that that's actually a possibility, they're not gonna accept anything less. I'm afraid that as far as the Republican party goes for a while, it's going to be nothing but crazies.
There are a few, like Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney and Adam Kinzinger (and damn you, society, for making me say anything nice about any of 'em) who are struggling to keep some sanity in the GOP, but... it's just not gonna happen. The GOP figured out that most of their base are absolute idiots who don't understand basic logic, believe any conspiracy theory they're told, and will waddle like baby ducklings after any authoritarian as long as he hints that he'll fix it so they can start saying the N-word again.
DeSantis has just a woefully pathetic job, but doing a bad job doesn't matter to Republicans anymore. Hell, look at the whole South -- worst results in the country for decade after decade, and yet their voters remain rabidly loyal because they're leash-trained. And right now the Republicans see DeSantis as a guy who'll do the same shitty, hateful, idiotic junk that Trump did, but will have enough sense not to grab pussies and tweet so much. He's their great white-supremacist hope.
So, I definitely wish Crist luck, but I'm afraid things are too far gone for him to get very far. There simply is no place in the Republican party for sane folks anymore.
